Inside a private room, Chase sat alone, drinking in silence. Chadwick, seated beside him, glanced over. “Mr. Mercer, trouble at home?”
At the mention of home, Chase’s irritation flared. “No.”
He lit a cigarette, his face clouded with frustration.
He never should have broken off his engagement with Nina for Katrina–that crazy woman.
“Had a fight with your wife?” Chadwick pressed. “Women just need a little coaxing.”
Chase said nothing.
Coax Katrina? As if he hadn’t already done enough of that.
When they first got together, Katrina had been gentle and agreeable. But over time, her temper grew more unpredictable–especially during the period when the Mercer family went bankrupt. Back then, it felt like she’d become a completely different person.
When Katrina first got pregnant, things were fine. But a couple of months in, when it became clear the Mercer family wasn’t recovering, she tried more than once to secretly terminate the pregnancy. Each time, he found out and stopped her.
After carrying the baby to term and giving birth, she changed even more. She criticized him daily for being useless, picking fights over the smallest things.
He was always the one smoothing things over, always the one giving in. Katrina acted like a queen, and as her husband, he wasn’t allowed a single mistake.
Only now did he fully understand–his mother had been right. Katrina had been after their money from the very beginning.
“Mr. Mercer, don’t let it get to you,” someone else chimed in. “We’ve got plenty of pretty girls here. Pick one, take your mind off things.”
None of the men in the room was exactly upstanding.
Chase had no interest in that. He might not love Katrina anymore, but he wasn’t about to cheat
on her.
Before he could even refuse, the other man had already waved toward the door. Moments later, a line of women filed into the room.

Some were bold and glamorous, others soft and innocent–looking. Every one of them was younger and prettier than Katrina.
Someone in the room let out a crude whistle. A few of the women flushed, then moved in to sit beside the men.
Chase wasn’t bothered by it. At past business gatherings, he’d had women pour his drinks before. He felt nothing for them.
But then his gaze shifted–and the woman who had just taken a seat beside him bore a faint resemblance to Nina.
“Mr. Mercer, let me pour you a drink.”
Amber’s voice was soft and sultry–nothing like Nina’s. There was a practiced allure about her.
Chase looked away. Amber’s figure was striking, and as she poured, she deliberately brushed against his arm.
He hadn’t been intimate with Katrina for quite some time. With the alcohol in his self–control began to slip.

The others quickly picked up on his interest in Amber and, reading the room, kept the drinks coming.
A few rounds later, Amber leaned weakly against him, her voice low and coaxing. “Mr. Mercer… are you heading home tonight?”
The room had emptied out. Chase knew exactly what she meant. In their circle, very few men stayed faithful after marriage.
For Katrina’s sake, he’d always held himself back.
But now, he found himself tempted to cross that line.
Just as Amber leaned closer, the door to the private room suddenly swung open.
Nina stood in the doorway. She took in the scene–Chase with a woman beside him—and offered a faintly apologetic look. “Sorry, wrong room.”
She turned to leave, closing the door behind her.
