Nina shook her head. “I’m fine. It’s just… the things Mrs. Mercer said might make Katrina misunderstand. You should explain it to her.”
“Everything she said–that was how I really feel.”
Chase looked at her earnestly. “I didn’t know how to say it to you myself, so I let my mom speak for me. But over these past five years, I’ve finally figured it out. You’re the one I love, Nina… I know I was wrong. I’m not asking you to forgive me right away. I just hope you’ll give me a chance to pursue you.”
Nina met the emotion in his eyes with nothing more than a faint smile.
Back then, Chase had loved Katrina so deeply that he was willing to give up his status as the Mercer family’s heir. And yet, in just five years, he’d grown completely tired of her.
His so–called devotion felt painfully cheap.
“Mr. Mercer,” Nina said calmly, “I think my presence has already gotten in the way of your relationship with Katrina. It’s probably best if we don’t see each other anymore. Tomorrow is my birthday—I’ve already agreed to Mrs. Mercer’s invitation for you all to come. For her sake, and so Katrina doesn’t overthink things, you should bring her with you.”
She repeated Katrina’s name over and over, even softening her tone to mimic the gentle way Katrina used to speak five years ago.
On the surface, every word sounded like she was thinking of Chase.
But the more considerate she seemed, the more it hurt him.
With that, Nina got into her car.
What she’d just said was clearly meant to draw a line between them, yet she’d delivered it as if she had no choice–leaving just enough room for hope, for possibility.
That was exactly how Katrina had kept Chase dangling in the
past.
And Chase had fallen for it completely, unable to let go.
Katrina had always been good at playing the part. After her husband died in the previous life, she inherited his wealth and spent her days in mourning, tears never far from her eyes. Chase had practically thrown himself at her, eager to comfort her, while she perfected the art of drawing him in and pushing him away.

In the end, the two of them had become partners in wrongdoing. Chase’s love for Katrina had sunk deep into his bones.
Deep enough that, for her sake, he’d killed Nina–and their two children.
Every time Nina thought of it, the pain was unbearable.
If Chase had just told her from the beginning that he wanted to be with Katrina, that he wanted a divorce, she would have taken the children and left without a word, never looking
back.
But instead, he’d insisted she remain a Mercer even in death–stripping her of everything, leaving her with nothing and no one to rely on.
An ungrateful wretch. A man with no conscience.
This time, she wouldn’t let him off.
Everything she had lost in her previous life–she would make him pay for it, piece by piece.
By early evening the next day, the ballroom at The Solstice was already packed.
Word had spread that the Tann family’s daughter was back in the country and hosting a birthday banquet. The major families of Linholt had all shown up, many bringing along their eligible sons in hopes of forming a match with the Tanns.
Outside the hall, a group of well–dressed young women lingered near the entrance, sizing up the man standing there–Caleb.
He wore a white suit, his tie loosened just enough to give him an easy, slightly languid air. In Linholt, it was rare to see a young heir as striking as he was, and curiosity quickly drew a small crowd.
“Who is he? I don’t think I’ve seen him before.”
“Caleb–you don’t know? He’s been studying abroad these past few years and rarely comes back. Apparently, he’s pretty famous among the international students.”
“I heard he’s about to get engaged to the Tann family’s daughter. Is that true?”
“Of course it’s true! They say the Rhodes family has already sent betrothal gifts. Nina only came back to build her career because she’s going to marry into the Rhodes family!”
