Esther lit up the moment she saw Jensen. “Jensen, come on–dinner’s ready.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Tann.”

Jensen took the seat across from Caleb, who casually waved Nina over to sit beside him.
Nina couldn’t smile. Not even a little.
As Esther served Jensen, she added, “Since you’re here in Linholt this time, stay a few more days. Marvin’s been looking forward to playing chess with you.”
“Exactly!” Caleb jumped in. “Mr. Tann wipes the floor with me every time we play. Now that Jensen’s here, he can take my place. I’m hopeless at chess.”
He slipped into easy conversation with Jensen in no time.
Meanwhile, Nina felt like she had a lump in her throat, like she was sitting on pins and needles. She’d never felt this on edge at a dinner table before.
Jensen said calmly, “I’m not as good as Mr. Tann, but I can manage a few
games.”
“You two brats together still wouldn’t beat me!” Marvin laughed, already loosening up drink.

Nina nearly choked on her drink. Caleb quickly grabbed a napkin for her. “What’s going on with you? You can choke on water now?”
Nina caught Jensen’s gaze flick toward them. For some reason, it made her uneasy. She snatched the napkin from Caleb. “I’ve got it!”
“Why are you acting shy? Back in school, you had no problem asking me to buy pads and deliver them to the girls‘ bathroom for you.”
“Pfft-!”
Nina spat her drink straight out.
Esther smacked Caleb on the arm. “What is wrong with you? Watch what you say at the table!”
“I’m serious, Mrs. Tann! If I hadn’t looked out for Nina all those years abroad, who knows which guy might’ve swept her off her feet by now. I deserve some credit.”

Nina couldn’t take his bragging anymore. She quickly put more food on his plate. “How about you talk less and eat more?”
Caleb tried to keep going, but Nina shoved a chicken drumstick into his mouth. He mumbled around it for a while, unable to get another word out, and finally gave up and started chewing.
Trying to steer the conversation elsewhere, Esther turned to Jensen. “I heard you’re engaged. When’s the wedding?”
“We haven’t set a date yet,” Jensen replied evenly. “But… it shouldn’t be too far off.”
His tone was flat, like he didn’t have much to say about it.
Esther nodded. “It’s good to settle down sooner rather than later. I’ve heard Ms. Beaumont is well–mannered and very pretty. When you do get married, make sure to send us an invitation.”
Jensen didn’t respond. His gaze drifted to Nina.
Nina suddenly had no appetite at all. She set down her fork. “Mom, I’m full.”
She turned and headed upstairs. Caleb wiped his mouth and immediately followed, calling over his shoulder, “Mr. Tann, Mrs. Tann–I’m done too!”
Esther frowned at their retreating backs. “What’s gotten into those two?”
Jensen watched as Caleb trailed after Nina up the stairs, his expression dimming slightly.
“Nina! Nina!” Caleb caught up to her. “Why are you walking so fast?”
Nina shot him a glare. “Because of the nonsense you were spouting downstairs! Would it kill you to talk less?”
“What did I say? It was all true!” Caleb started to argue, then suddenly paused, something clicking. “Wait… don’t tell me you like Jensen?”
“Me? Like Jensen?”
“Then what? You heard he’s getting married and ran off–pretty suspicious if you ask me.”
Nina was speechless.
Caleb clapped her on the shoulder like a buddy. “Come on, there are plenty of fish in the sea. Why fixate on one guy? Sure, Jensen’s good–looking and comes from a great family, but he’s taken. With your looks and background, you could have your pick. No need to hang everything on one person.”
