Katrina’s grades had plummeted recently, and she kept faking sick to go on dates with Chase.
Dora had finally run out of patience.
“Ms. Reed, my dad’s really busy. He might not be able to make it.”
“What about your mother?”
Katrina’s face paled even more at the mention of her mother.
No one else in the room understood why she’d gone quiet, but Nina did.
Katrina’s parents had divorced years ago, and her father had raised her alone ever since.
But in front of her classmates and teachers, Katrina couldn’t possibly admit that her were split up.

After all, the whole school thought she was the real Sawyer heiress. If anyone found out she was just the driver’s daughter, the perfect image she’d worked so hard to build would be completely ruined.
When Dora saw Katrina staying silent, she said firmly, “Katrina, your grades have dropped drastically, and your guardians are responsible. Whether they’re busy or not, they have to come in at noon.”
With that, Dora began assigning summer homework, leaving Katrina no room to argue.
Just the thought of her father–a driver–showing up at school made Katrina’s stomach twist with anxiety.
If her classmates found out she was the only poor student in the sophomore class, the lie she’d told to frame Nina would be exposed for sure.
By noon, most students had packed up and left for summer break, but Tara and her friends stayed behind.
Chase even stood right by Katrina’s side, making her panic even more.
Katrina had told her dad to come at 12:30, hoping Chase and the others would be gone by then so no one would learn who her father really was.
But Chase refused to leave, worried she’d be upset after her meeting with the teacher.

Tara and the others stayed for the same reason–they wanted to comfort Katrina, since this was the first time she’d ever been told to bring her parents in.
Little did they know, Katrina didn’t want comfort. She just wanted them to leave as fast as possible.
Otherwise, her huge lie would fall apart.
Nina deliberately took her time packing her worksheets. When Jensen saw only Chase’s group still inside the Class A, he stepped in.
He walked over to Nina, ready to help her pack her bag.
But Nina placed her hand over his and gave him a subtle look.
After spending so much time together at the Tann Villa, Jensen immediately caught on. He pulled out a chair and sat down beside her. “You said you didn’t understand a problem earlier. I’ll help you with it now.”
Nina had been trying to think of an excuse to stay and watch the drama unfold. With Jensen’s perfect cover, she quickly pulled out her worksheet and pointed at a random problem. “This
one.”
Jensen took the textbook and looked through it slowly.
Katrina, sitting not far away, was growing desperate.
Chase and Tara wouldn’t leave–and now Nina and Jensen were staying too?
When the clock struck 12:15, Katrina could no longer hold back. “Chase, Tara, you guys go home. I’ll be fine on my own.”
Chase shook his head. “I’m staying with you. If that old hag tries to pick on you, I’m not letting her get away with it.”
“Yeah, Katrina! We’ve got your back. Don’t be scared. That witch is just being hormonal. Your grades slipped a little–does she really have to call your parents?”
Tara always took Katrina’s side.
