Jensen stepped up to her. “You’ve had too much to drink. Go upstairs and rest.”
“I haven’t even finished my food yet!”

She pointed at the untouched skewers on the table, then pulled him down into a chair beside her. “You’ve fixed this place up really nicely. My bedroom and yours are exactly like the ones back at my house. Be honest, did you just love my family’s home that much?”
Jensen rubbed his temples, silently regretting letting her order whatever she wanted.
“It’s been more than five years since we last saw each other,” Nina said as she poured him a drink. “Aren’t you gonna have one with me? You left without a single word back then. I felt like all my kindness had been wasted on nothing. I’d gone out of my way to help you, yet you never even saw me as a real friend.”
He stared at the full beer glass in front of him. “I had no choice but to leave.”
“They pressured you using my family, didn’t they? If you’d just talked to me about it, I would’ve understood. But you chose to say nothing at all.”
Seeing the hurt glistening in her eyes, he reached out and wiped away her stray tears gently. “It wasn’t that I didn’t want to tell you. I was afraid I’d lose my resolve the moment I faced
you.”
His voice sank low. Nina gazed at him steadily for a long while. “There’s something I’ve always wanted to ask you. Were you the one who pulled me out of the swimming pool that time? Not the time with Katrina, the one before that.”
When she had her rebirth, she faintly heard someone calling her name beside her. The voice had felt unfamiliar then, yet after growing close to Jensen later on, she suspected it had been his all along. She had never gotten the chance to confirm it.
“I can’t recall that clearly.”
He lifted the glass and drained the beer in one gulp.
Drowsiness soon washed over Nina. Jensen steadied her by the shoulders. “Let me take you up to bed.”
Alcohol had made her too sleepy to keep her eyes open. He lifted her gently into his arms and walked slowly toward the stairs.

By the time they reached her room, she was already fast asleep.

He stared at her peaceful sleeping face, still finding the whole scene surreal. He hesitated, wanting to brush her cheek, yet pulled his hand back timidly in the end.
He still remembered their childhood days. Back then their families were close, so she often came over to his place to play. She had a little baby fat and looked as cute as a doll. Quiet yet never timid, her bright round eyes were utterly charming.
She had never looked down on him for being an illegitimate child. Instead, she always took the initiative to invite him to join in her games.
She might have long forgotten those old days, or she might have treated everyone with that same warmth. But every single moment was deeply etched in his mind, kept safe for years on end.
That was why he had noticed something wrong instantly when she jumped into the pool for Chase years ago. Knowing she could not swim, he had dived right in to save her.
Even when she had put on weight and grown quiet and insecure, she remained the same kind-hearted girl he had always known in his eyes.
He tucked the quilt neatly around her. “Sleep tight. You won’t remember any of this
tomorrow.”
He knew perfectly well how low her tolerance was. She always blacked out most memories after getting drunk.
He still thought of the time she drank back in high school. She had rambled on about how she used to hold her liquor well, wondering why she had turned out so bad at it all of a sudden. He had always taken those words as silly drunken nonsense, and still did to that day.
Early the next morning, Nina woke up in a daze. She was still fully clothed, with the blanket properly covering her body. She vaguely recalled chugging two cans of beer on an empty stomach the night before, and everything after that turned blank. She had no idea how she had ended up tucked safely in bed.
