The guard’s tone was harsh and unyielding. Chase had never been treated like this before. His face darkened instantly. “I’m the heir of the Mercer family! Who gave you the nerve to speak to me like that?”
Chase had quite a reputation in Linholt. Even small business owners usually went out of their way to flatter him, praising his success at such a young age. He’d never been spoken to like this by a security guard.
The guard let out a mocking laugh. “The Mercer family? You’re not even fit to shine the Tann family’s shoes. And don’t you know? Your family’s on the verge of bankruptcy. That name doesn’t make you royalty anymore. Give it a few days–you’ll be out there scraping by.”
What had happened to the Mercer family had long since spread through their social circle. Just about every guard working in the villa district knew.
Chase’s expression turned grim. “What nonsense are you talking about?”
Things had been difficult for the Mercer family lately, sure–but bankruptcy? That was impossible.
“Looks like you really don’t know, Mr. Mercer. Your family’s been drowning in debt. If Ms. Tann hadn’t been holding things together, most of your projects would’ve collapsed already -you’d have gone under by now.
“And after all that, the Mercers turned around and bit the hand that helped them. And you still have the nerve to come looking for Ms. Tann? Kicking you out is already more courtesy than you deserve.”
Every word from the guard felt like it was grinding Chase’s pride into the dirt.
He suddenly recalled what Cecilia had told him earlier–that the Mercer family had reached a dead end. At the time, he’d assumed she was exaggerating to pressure him into marrying Nina. He hadn’t expected any of it to be true.
“You’d be better off saving your energy,” the guard added coldly. “Instead of coming here, maybe think about how to hold on to your position as the Mercer family’s heir.”
With that, the two guards slammed the iron gate shut.
Chase clenched his fists.
Nina. The Tann family.
They’d really taken things this far.

Fuming, he got into his car and sped off. Watching him drive away, Nina felt a surge of satisfaction rise from deep inside.
That little bit of humiliation was already too much for him?
The hard days were still ahead.
That evening, when Marvin and Esther returned and heard that Chase had come by to cause trouble, neither of them looked pleased.
“That Chase–he actually had the nerve to come here and make a scene!”
Marvin was so angry that he lost his appetite, slamming his fork down onto the table.
Nina spoke up gently from the side. “Dad, don’t get upset. If it really bothers you, next time we can just hang a sign at the gate–‘No Dogs or Chase allowed.“”
That finally eased Marvin’s expression a little. “You and your nonsense.
“But honestly, the Mercer family has gone too far. How could they act like this?”
Esther sighed.
She’d once treated Chase well, and yet he’d turned out to be nothing but an ungrateful ingrate.
Once Nina felt the mood was right, she spoke up. “Dad, Mom, I remember Mr. Mercer used to hold shares in the Tann family business. And we have shares in the Mercer family, right?”
“That’s right,” Marvin said.
“I heard from my classmates that the Mercer family’s been struggling lately. Since ties between our families are already cut, why don’t we contact a lawyer and buy back the Tann Group shares they’re holding? It would count as helping them out a bit. And in return, they should give back the shares we hold in Mercer Group.”
Nina knew her father had a soft heart. Even if hed managed to hold firm and refuse to support Mercer Group for now, there was no guarantee he wouldn’t waver later.
On top of that, the Mercer family’s stake in Tann Group brought in eight–figure dividends every month–more than enough to give them breathing room.
