Besides, Nina remembered that in her previous life, the Mercer family’s crisis hadn’t just been about bankruptcy–it had been about overwhelming debt. Back then, she’d already been married to Chase, and because the Tann and Mercer families held shares in each other’s companies, the Tanns had no choice but to pour money into helping them survive.
This time, Chase would have to rely on himself.
Jensen barely said a word at the dinner table.
Nina noticed right away that something was off. He rarely looked this down.
After dinner, she followed him upstairs and caught up as he headed down the second–floor hallway. “Jensen, are you upset?”
He stopped and turned to her. “Do you care a lot about the Mercer family?”

In a way, she did–just not in the way he meant. What she cared about was when they’d finally go bankrupt, when Chase would hit rock bottom.
Of course, she couldn’t say that out loud. She frowned slightly. “Why would you think that?”
Jensen was quiet for a moment before asking, “Are you worried about the Mercer family… or about Chase?”

Jensen had believed that, too.
Seeing his hesitation, Nina said, “You said it yourself–that was before. People move on. I did like him once, but I don’t anymore.”
“Then who do you like now?”

For a split second, his heart seemed to skip.
Family?
But… he didn’t want to be just family to her.

Most of their classmates had already left that afternoon, and Chase’s no–show had made her lose face in front of everyone. Even Tara had made an excuse to leave that evening.
The more Katrina thought about it, the worse she felt. Unwilling to give up, she pulled out her phone and tried calling Chase again.
