Then he hung up.
Katrina’s expression darkened instantly.
It had only been one day–what on earth had happened?

By the next day, news of Chase and Katrina’s fight had spread through the entire class.
Chase, who had always been so public about his affection, had swapped out their matching profile pictures the night before. Combined with the fact that he’d stood Katrina up, the rumors took off quickly.
Katrina, who was usually active in the class group chat, didn’t say a word all day.
Nina wasn’t surprised. Chase and Katrina had never really belonged to the same world–it was only a matter of time before things fell apart.
When you’re in that early, heady stage, all you see is each other. Even during the honeymoon phase, flaws can seem charming. But once the novelty wears off, those same quirks start to feel forced and irritating.
Right now, though, Nina had more important things to focus on than gossip–like her studies.
In her previous life, she’d been a top student with a chance to study abroad. But her engagement to the Mercer family had derailed everything. After graduation, she married into the Mercers, spending three years in a vague, unofficial role before finally registering her marriage with Chase. He hadn’t even given her a wedding.
The next twenty years had been spent at home, taking care of her husband and raising children. She’d gone from being the daughter of the Tann Group to a full–time housewife, cut off from work and social life entirely.
This time, she wasn’t going down that path again.
She was going to get into the university she wanted. Even if she didn’t go abroad, she would stay close to her parents and help grow the Tann Group into something even greater.
That evening, Marvin came home looking troubled. Esther noticed immediately. “Rough day at the company? Why do you look so worried?”
“The Mercer family came by again today, asking to see me. I turned them away,” Marvin said. “About what Nina mentioned last night–buying back shares and returning ours… I’m not sure how to bring it up.”

Chapter 33 Buying Back Shares
They had over a decade of history, after all.

Marvin had always valued loyalty and relationships. Now that it came down to settling accounts, he found himself hesitating.
Nina frowned.
In her previous life, Cecilia had taken advantage of that softness, coming back to the Tann family for help again and again. In the end, if the Tanns didn’t step in, they were painted as heartless and ungrateful.
“Dad, why don’t I handle it with the lawyer?” Nina offered.
“You?” Marvin looked at her. “What would you know about buying back shares or withdrawing investments?”
“Dad, I’m seventeen–I’m not a kid anymore. I might not understand all the details, but the lawyer does. I’ll just be there to talk to Mrs. Mercer and persuade her to return our shares. I promise I won’t mess around.”
Seeing how serious she was, Marvin let out a slow breath. “All right. You can give it a try. Just remember–it’s fine if we take a bit of a loss. I don’t want people saying we’ve forgotten our sense of loyalty.”
Nina let out a quiet, self–mocking laugh in her heart.
The Tann family, lacking loyalty?
After everything they’d done for the Mercers over the years, it was more than enough.
The Mercers, on the other hand, were nothing but ingrates–hardly deserving of such generosity.
This time, she wouldn’t stop until the Mercer family lost so much they couldn’t even afford at decent wedding gift for Chase’s future wife.
The next day, Nina showed up at the Mercer house with the lawyer, Preston Vance.
Inside, Cecilia was already on edge over Mercer Group’s recent stock crash. When the doorbell rang, she assumed it was another debt collector. Irritated, she yanked the door open. “It’s early in the morning–what’s with the pounding? Didn’t I say the money would be repaid?”
She cut herself off as soon as she looked up and saw Nina standing there.
