It wasn’t surprising that neither of them recognized a true luxury brand that kept a low profile.
Nina was curious to see just how Katrina would embarrass herself later.
Since Nina had given the go–ahead, Sloane had no choice. “This way, please,” she said to Tara and Katrina.
Neither of them expected Nina’s word to carry so much weight, but at least they could try on the dresses now.
Tara quickly pulled Katrina along, picking out several gowns they liked before hurrying into the fitting room.
Sloane hesitated, then said quietly, “Ms. Tann, we can’t sell these dresses.”
“I know.” Nina smiled faintly and leaned in to whisper a few words.
Sloane nodded. “Understood, Ms. Tann. I’ll take care of it right away.”
Nina gave a slight nod in return, then settled onto the sofa nearby, perfectly at ease.
Tara and Katrina came out of the fitting room a moment later.
Katrina had chosen a white evening gown. She was naturally slim, with a soft, delicate kind of beauty, and the white made her look even gentler–almost angelic.
She had never worn anything like this before. Compared to the dresses in the mall, this one was on a completely different level.
“Oh my God, Katrina, you look incredible in that!” Tara exclaimed, openly envious. “If Chase sees you in this, he won’t be able to take his eyes off you.”
From the sofa, Nina suddenly let out a laugh.
Tara turned to her, frowning. “Nina, what’s so funny?”
“It’s a beautiful dress,” Nina said lightly. “Just not quite worthy of a Sawyer heiress.”
The edge in her tone immediately irritated Tara.
“Katrina looks good in anything. Don’t be jealous.”

She glanced at Nina’s gown and gave a dismissive snort. “You came all this way to shop–don’t tell me you’re planning to show up at Chase’s birthday party too? Nina, you really are something. Acting one way in public, another behind people’s backs. Katrina invited you last time out of kindness, and you turned it down. Now you’re trying to worm your way in?”
Nina replied, almost casually, “It’s not that I want to go. Mrs. Mercer insisted I attend, so I don’t really have a choice. Otherwise, I wouldn’t bother with a small gathering like that.”
The moment she heard that Cecilia had invited Nina, Katrina’s expression tightened.
She knew Cecilia had once wanted Nina to marry into the Mercer family. Now that Cecilia had agreed- at least on the surface–to let her date Chase, why was she inviting Nina behind her back?
“Nina, cut it out,” Tara scoffed. “You’re just a driver’s daughter. What makes you think you’d be invited to Chase’s engagement party? Mrs. Mercer probably just feels sorry for you. Don’t flatter yourself.”
Nina didn’t react. She simply sipped her hot coffee.
Taking her silence as defeat, Tara turned back to Katrina. “Don’t listen to her. You look amazing in that dress. She’s just jealous.”
