Those gowns were display pieces–they weren’t supposed to be sold at all. If the Tann family hadn’t been long–standing clients, she never would’ve gone along with this.
Still, she couldn’t help wondering how those two would end up bringing the dresses back.
That afternoon, Nina returned home.
Esther had already set the table. “Nina, did you get the dress?”
“I did.”
“Nina, come here,” Marvin said, his expression serious. “I need to ask you something.”
Nina had expected this–there was no way the charge on the card would go unnoticed–so she walked over without protest.
“I saw a transfer of three hundred seventy–six thousand from the card I gave you today,” Marvin said. “What happened?”
Jensen, who had been sitting at the table, immediately sensed something was off when he heard how much Nina had spent. He was just about to step in and take the blame when Nina spoke first, her voice tinged with grievance.
“I ran into a couple of classmates at the boutique… They wanted to buy dresses too, but they didn’t have enough money.”
Esther frowned. “If they don’t have the money, they should ask their parents. Why would you cover it for them?”
She caught the issue right away.
“They said their parents would be upset if they found out they spent over three hundred thousand on clothes,” Nina explained, pulling out the IOU. “So they asked me to pay first.”
The note clearly showed that Katrina and Tara owed her three hundred seventy–six thousand, with Katrina’s signature and thumbprint at the bottom.
Esther’s brow furrowed as she read it. “Katrina? What does her family do?”
“She’s the Sawyer family’s daughter–Chase’s girlfriend,” Nina said. “I figured someone like that

wouldn’t lie to me. And there’s an IOU.”
At the mention of the Sawyer family, Marvin and Esther exchanged a look.

“I’ve met the Sawyer girl before,” Esther said slowly. “From what I know, she’s studying abroad –and her name isn’t Katrina. It’s Katherine.”
“That sounds right,” Marvin added.
The more Esther thought about it, the more it didn’t add up. “Nina, could she have lied to you?”
“I don’t think so,” Nina said, feigning confusion. “Most people at school know her as the Sawyer daughter, and she says so herself. It’s not the kind of lie you’d just make up. And with the IOU -how would she pay me back if it weren’t true?”
But Marvin and Esther had seen enough to know that kids that age could lie out of vanity.
On top of that, the girl was Chase’s girlfriend. That didn’t improve their impression of her.
“Stay away from people like that,” Esther said firmly. “When the deadline comes, have them pay you back immediately. If they don’t, come to us.”
Nina nodded obediently.
“Let’s eat,” Marvin said at last.
Jensen watched Nina from the side but said nothing.
By evening, Nina returned to her room and found an elegant gift box on the table.
She walked over and opened it. Inside was a stunning diamond necklace that immediately caught her eye. The stone had been cut into the shape of a teardrop and set in silver, shimmering under the light. Both the craftsmanship and the design were flawless–this wasn’t something cheap.
Nina lifted it to her neck and tried it on. As expected, it made her skin look even fairer.
With this much thought put into it, there was no way it was from anyone but Jensen.
Clutching the necklace, she hurried across the hall to his room and knocked. “Jensen? Are you asleep?”
