Chapter Two Hundred Twenty Nine
“I do not know where they are, Grand Witch,” Diana answered calmly. “All I know is that Ravenna attacked me and then escaped with Thorne.”
Claim
The words left her mouth easily enough. They were not entirely false. Ravenna had attacked her. And Ravenna had escaped with Thorne. Diana simply left out the part about why Ravenna had attacked her–and who had given her the means to escape.
Across the room, Talon remained silent. His expression revealed nothing, but Diana knew her mate well enough to notice the slight tightening of his jaw. He knew exactly what she was doing. And he would protect her secret.
Elara studied Diana for several seconds before speaking.
“Would you allow us to look through your memories, Luna?”
Diana’s brows immediately pulled together.
“Check my memories?”
“Yes.”
Elara took a small step forward, though she was careful not to move too close.
“There is a form of white magic that allows us to temporarily connect with another person’s memories. We would not alter them or remove anything. We would simply observe what you remember from the battle.”
Diana’s expression became guarded.
“And why would that help you find Ravenna?”
“Because memories are not always as reliable as we believe,” Elara explained. “During moments of extreme stress, the mind sometimes overlooks small details. A word spoken in the background. A symbol. A movement. The direction someone looked before disappearing. Even a magical signature that you consciously failed to recognize.”
She paused.
“There may be something within your memories that you saw but did not realize was important.”
Diana was about to respond when Talon’s voice cut through the room.
“No.”

Claim
Everyone turned toward him. Talon had not moved from Diana’s side. But something about him had changed. His posture had become rigid, and his eyes were fixed directly on Elara.
“I will not allow it.”
Elara blinked.
“Alpha King-”
“She is carrying my pups,” Talon said firmly. “I will not allow magic to be used on her.”
Diana glanced at him. She knew Talon’s objection was not entirely an act. Even if they had nothing to hide, he probably would have reacted exactly the same way.
Ever since learning Diana was pregnant–and especially after learning she was carrying twins -Talon had become suspicious of practically everything that came near her. Magic. Potions. Unfamiliar food. Even healers occasionally received questioning looks from him. Fenrir was
worse.
“It will not affect the Luna or the pups, Alpha King,” Elara assured him. “Memory viewing is a form of white magic. It is completely harmless when performed correctly.”
“I do not care.”
The blunt response made one of the younger witches visibly stiffen. Elara remained composed.
“Perhaps if I explain how the spell works-”
“There is nothing to explain.”
Talon stepped closer to Diana.
“No magic will be used on my mate.”
“Alpha King, I assure you-”
“And I said no.”
The finality in Talon’s voice made the room fall silent. Diana could already feel Fenrir stirring beneath Talon’s skin. Protective. Suspicious. Ready. Elara exchanged a brief glance with another witch. Then she looked back at Talon.
“Is there a particular reason you are so strongly opposed to us viewing her memories?”
Talon’s eyes narrowed. Elara continued before anyone could interrupt.

“Is there perhaps something within the Luna’s memories that you would prefer we not see?”
Diana nearly closed her eyes. Wrong question. She felt Talon’s aura before she saw the change in him. Power suddenly rolled through the office. Heavy. Dominating. Ancient Alpha blood combined with Fenrir’s enormous presence filled every corner of the room. The younger witches instinctively stepped backward. One of them actually reached for the witch beside her.
Elara’s confident expression faltered. Talon stepped forward.
“You dare ask me that?”
His voice had dropped dangerously low. Fenrir pushed closer to the surface. Diana could almost feel the enormous wolf staring through Talon’s eyes.
“You come into my territory,” Talon continued, “enter my office, and ask permission to use magic on my pregnant mate. I refuse, and your response is to question whether I am hiding something?”
“Alpha King, I did not mean-
“Did
you forget what happened the last time a white witch used her magic against my Luna?”
Elara went silent. Talon’s aura intensified.
“The last white witch standing beside Diana attacked her.”
Diana resisted the urge to look at him. Technically true. Again.
There seemed to be a great deal of technically true information being exchanged inside the Alpha office today.
“She threw my pregnant mate across a battlefield,” Talon continued. “And then disappeared with the same witch responsible for attacking my pack and our allies.”
His eyes flashed.
“And now, one week later, you walk into my home and ask me to allow another witch into my mate’s mind?”
Fenrir growled through their bond.
“Absolutely not.”
Talon silently agreed. The pressure inside the office became almost unbearable. Two of the witches stepped farther back. Even Elara seemed to struggle against the overwhelming force of the Alpha King’s aura.

Claire
Only one person remained completely unaffected. Seraphina. The Grand Witch had not moved. She stood in exactly the same position as before, watching Talon with what looked suspiciously like amusement.
Then, to Diana’s surprise, the elderly witch smiled. Slowly, Seraphina raised one hand.
“That is enough.”
Her voice was not loud. It did not need to be. Something about it immediately drew
everyone’s attention.
“Elara.”
The younger witch lowered her head.
“Grand Witch.”
“Do not question an Alpha’s instinct to protect his mate. Especially when said mate is carrying his pups.”
Seraphina turned toward Talon.
“There is no need for hostility, Alpha King.”
“My hostility depends entirely on what happens next.”
That earned another small smile from Seraphina.
“So I see.”
