“Good child, take Laurel back now. She’s just arrived in the tribe and hasn’t had proper rest yet.
“The cubs are out of danger. The outbreak will end soon.
“My mates are here to help. You two don’t need to worry.”
Ayla took Laurel’s hand and walked them out of the cave.
Watching the two of them leave, Ayla let out a soft sigh.
She knew Wilona’s temperament well. A proud female spoiled by the tribe.
Laurel must have been wronged just now, yet she’d kept the bigger picture in mind and avoided arguing with Wilona in the restricted area.
That kind of kindness and gentleness moved Ayla.
“Sigh. I’ll need to protect this little female more in the future.” Ayla rubbed her temples. “She’s too soft. Too easy to bully.”
After saying goodbye to Ayla, Laurel rode Fenfrost toward the vast forest outside the tribe.
The scenery was beautiful, giving her the feeling of an outdoor adventure.
She brought Sebastian along as they searched the woods for materials to fix touching different plants and discovering new ingredients along the way.
up
the cave,
They found several large trees covered in what looked like mangosteen. Laurel picked a dark fruit and cracked it open, revealing segments of snow-white flesh inside.
She pinched off a piece and chewed. “Hiss… that’s spicy.”
Her mind reeled. Garlic. It was garlic. No wonder her instincts had told her it was a seasoning.
Sebastian frowned as he picked a full bag of garlic. He really didn’t like that sharp smell.
When they reached a field of stalks nearly 13 feet tall, Laurel spotted several huge fruits hanging sparsely from the branches.
Wrapped in green leaves, each fruit was longer than her entire arm. When she broke one open, rows of plump golden kernels were revealed.

“Wow. This is corn. Sebastian, We won’t have to live on just potatoes and sweet potatoes anymore.”
Seeing Laurel bounce with excitement, Sebastian smiled and picked every ear of corn in the field.
He left nothing behind.
“Sebastian, come look. There are so many wild mushrooms here. Oh my god, that’s pine mushroom. It’s huge. The red one is porcini, the yellow one is chanterelle, and the one with the honeycomb cap is morel.”
With a wave of her small hand, Laurel decided to harvest the whole patch.
“These are perfect for soup. Trust me, they’re incredible. Take all of them.”
Sebastian hesitated. “Laurel, you can’t eat mushrooms casually. We only eat white round mushrooms. Colored ones are poisonous. A beastman once ate a red mushroom and died that same night.”
“What? You only eat white round mushrooms? That’s such a waste.”
Laurel blinked her clear, bright eyes at Sebastian and asked seriously, “Sebastian, do you trust
me?”
“Yeah. I do.”
“Then let me tell you a secret. I actually recognize all plants. If you follow me, we’ll only pick delicious, non-toxic mushrooms.”
“Okay.” Sebastian obediently followed behind her, starting to learn how to tell mushroom
apart.
He felt quietly amazed. Laurel really was a smart little female. Even something as hard as identifying mushrooms came naturally to her.
If they could discover more edible mushrooms, it would be a huge help for beastmen surviving the winter.
Ever since they’d met, Laurel kept surprising him. He trusted every word she said more and
more.
Just like with these mushrooms. As long as Laurel said they were edible, he wouldn’t hesitate to eat them.

And her intelligence went far beyond that.

She’d just said she recognized all plants. What kind of unbelievable ability was that? Even the great shaman wouldn’t dare boast like that.
As they gathered mushrooms, Sebastian praised her sincerely. “Laurel, how many more surprises are you going to give me? Pine mushrooms, peppers, crayfish, garlic, corn…”
He repeated the ingredients she’d mentioned before. “How do you come up with so many names that are easy to remember and sound so nice?”
Oh no. Alarm bells rang loudly in Laurel’s head.
Sebastian had always taken her human words in stride. Combined with how fev she’d interacted with, she’d gotten careless about how simple the beast world’s actually was.
She’d gotten carried away just now and blurted out a whole string of new words. Had she scared him?
Ugh. How could she make such a basic mistake?
