Claire no longer cared about the pain from her past. Her heart stayed calm, without even the slightest ripple.
But after hearing her story, Marcus felt both heartbroken and furious. He just hid it well and never showed it on his face.
Outside the window, snow still drifted down without end. Thick gray clouds covered the sky, as if the storm wanted to bury every ugly thing in the Beast World beneath white snow.
Meanwhile, inside the Grimstone Manor, a scheme was quietly taking shape.
Finlay sat at the top of the great hall. Several beastfolk sat below him, each one looking at him with flattering smiles.
“Since everyone is prepared,” Finlay announced, “the Sky Rites Ceremony will be held on schedule.”
His sharp gaze swept across the crowd below.
No one dared object.
“Our lord is wise!” they said in unison.
But one beastfolk stood out from the rest. Worry was written all over his face.
Three beast marks stretched across his cheeks, and a long, thin leopard tail swayed behind his strong body. He was a leopard beastfolk.
Finlay looked at him calmly.
“General Leapard, if you have something to say, speak freely.”
Zerak had been hesitating, but once he heard Finlay’s gentle tone, the words came rushing out.
“My Lord, after the ceremony, we still need to send ten Level 2 females to Valorhenge. But even if we include your female, we’re still short by one. What should we do?”
The moment the others heard this, their faces changed. They quickly started whispering among themselves.
“This is serious! If we fail, Valorhenge might send an army here. Grimstone wouldn’t stand a chance against them.”
“Yeah, what are we supposed to do now?”

These beastfolk were all Finlay’s most trusted men. Each one was responsible for a different part of the ceremony. This was also the first time they had heard about lacking a female, and they immediately panicked.
Finlay, however, didn’t seem too worried. Still, he pretended to look troubled.
“There are only ten days left before the ceremony,” he said slowly. “Why don’t you search the nearby tribes again? Maybe we overlooked.”
But Zerak Leapard looked helpless.
“My Lord, there’s no one left. The nearby tribes were so frightened they already moved away. As for the farther tribes, we searched them thoroughly before. There truly are no more Level 2 females.”
Females were already far rarer than males, and Level 2 females were even more precious. Most females had no level at all. They were considered Level 0 beastfolk, just like the fox clan females. Many of them would never even reach Level 1 in their entire lives.
As for Level 2 females, they were incredibly rare across the entire Beast World. Among all females, fewer than one in 10,000 could reach that level.
They had done everything they could, but they had only managed to find nine Level 2 females. Even that was already the best result possible. In most beastfolk tribes, having even one or two Level 2 females was considered incredibly rare.
The moment they heard that, everyone grew even more anxious. Their discussion became louder and louder.
After letting them argue for a while, Finlay finally cleared his throat.
“Don’t worry. Leave this to me,” he said calmly. “As the City Lord, it’s my duty to solve problems for the people. General Leapard, take these nine females to Valorhenge first so they won’t miss the deadline. Once we find the last one, I’ll personally bring her there myself.”
By then, he could finally take out all the frustration that the female had caused him before on the road. Just thinking about it made him feel excited.
The second someone took responsibility for the problem, everyone relaxed. They quickly started flattering him.
“Lord Finlay truly is bold and capable! Impressive!”
“You’re so reliable, My Lord. Putting Grimstone under your leadership was the best choice we
ever made.”

Chapter 156 The Missing Tenth Female
Inside the warm stone house, the fire burned bright. It was a sharp contrast to the heavy snowstorm outside.

Claire wore only a thin fur coat as she hurried around the room, dragging the crawling babies farther away from the fire pit. Even that simple task left her sweating hard.
There were too many babies, and they were all at the age where they refused to listen. The second she grabbed one, another crawled away. By the time she caught that one, the first had already vanished again.
She felt dizzy trying to keep up with all of them.
“Oh, come on! Can you little troublemakers behave for once?” Claire groaned as she dropped beside the stone bed. “Can you give me a break? Your dad only stepped out to cook dinner, and you’re already turning the house upside down!”
The babies were already five days old.
In only five short days, they had grown much chubbier. They no longer looked tiny and fragile like newborns. Now they were energetic, curious, and unbelievably mischievous.
Their round little eyes blinked as they crawled all over the room, making soft whining noises.
A layer of fluffy fur had started growing over their bodies, soft as clouds to the touch. The panda cubs who inherited Marcus’s features were especially adorable. Claire could barely put them down.
Cute as they were, though, they were incredible naughty.
Claire was so busy she nearly lost track of everything. Somehow, she barely managed to keep them safe from the fire and stop them from falling over all at once.
