Chapter 280 A Mother’s Tears of Joy
Claire let out a quiet sigh. “It’s all my fault. I didn’t pay enough attention to everyone. They were affected by Fiona’s Rosefire, and I didn’t even notice.”
Aurora gently patted her shoulder to comfort her.
“There are almost 10,000 beastfolk in this clan. How could you possibly watch over everyone? This isn’t your fault.”
Luckily, Corvin had figured it out in time and saved the clan.
Both women looked toward Fiona. By now, her face was so swollen that her eyes had disappeared behind the puffiness. She looked nothing like herself anymore. She certainly wasn’t charming anyone now.
Tyne and Eva stood together, clutching each other’s hands. Every time Marcus swung one of his massive bear paws, they both flinched.
“He’s terrifying! Mr. Holland is terrifying! He’s so brutal!”
“I know! He looks so cute, but he only aims for people’s faces! We better not cross him!”
Burrow silently agreed. Without realizing it, he looked at Claire with a little more caution than before.
Claire walked over with a smile.
“What are you all whispering about? Marcus is the sweetest. He’d never hit a kind, lovely female like you that hard.”
Eva’s heart thudded at this.
So, he would still hit us. Just not as hard? This is scary enough.
Tyne, on the other hand, simply nodded with sparkling eyes.
“Claire, you’re amazing! You came back and dealt with Fiona right away. Before you returned, I warned her over and over, but she never listened. I only have one beast mate. There was no way we could beat that whole crowd of her simps.”
Claire blinked in surprise. So, Rosefire really did make them act like hopeless followers.
Marcus dragged the limp Fiona over. The anger on his face was completely gone now.
“Claire, what should we do with this witch?”

Finished
Claire looked Fiona over. Her face was beyond recognition, but the rest of her body was untouched. She wasn’t sure if the swollen face would affect Fiona’s usefulness as a test subject. so she turned to Corvin.
Corvin nodded.
“Bring her to my treehouse.”
Kieran waved a hand. One of the beastfolk stepped forward, took Fiona from Marcus, shifted enough to spread a pair of wings, and flew toward the healer’s treehouse with her.
Under the night sky, Corvin’s black feathers looked as dark as ink, wrapping him in shadows. Only his refined, handsome face remained visible.
He looked at Claire and said, “When you have time, come see me. There’s something I’d like to ask you.”
Without another word, he disappeared into the darkness.
Claire watched him leave, puzzled. She didn’t think much of it.
What could he possibly want to ask me? He hadn’t sounded urgent.
Marcus puffed out his cheeks, clearly unhappy.
“Who does he think he is? He sounded so bossy. Claire isn’t his servant.”
Claire rubbed the back of his head.
“Come on. Maybe that’s just how he talks.”
Zane had already shifted back into his human form. He walked over to Claire at an easy pace.
“Claire, now that everything’s settled, shouldn’t we head back and get some rest?”
After everything Fiona had caused, it was already late into the night.
Matilda took Eva by the hand. Burrow and a few others followed behind them. They said goodbye to Claire and Kieran before heading home.
Kieran continued checking on every beastfolk who had taken the antidote. He didn’t relax until he was sure they had all recovered.
Claire glanced into her storage space with her mind. Every one of the younglings was fast asleep. Only then did she finally relax.

Aurora took Claire’s hand and walked with her toward the treehouse.
“Claire, did you have a litter of younglings with Rufus before?”

Finished!
Claire’s heart clenched.
The memory of the babies she believed she had lost hit her like a wave. Grief tightened around
her chest.
“Aurora… I… I didn’t…”
Her voice caught in her throat. She couldn’t force out another word.
But Aurora didn’t notice anything unusual.
She kept talking, “About halfway through last winter, Quentin caught a rogue beastfolk just outside the clan. He was carrying a whole bundle of eggs. He said Jeffrey had sent him to deliver them. They were the eggs you and Rufus had together. There were 25 of them.”
Lost in her grief, Claire suddenly looked up.
“Are you serious?”
Aurora nodded.
“Of course. Rufus and Zane were both away at the time. The rogue dropped off the eggs and ran. Quentin brought them back. Every egg carried Rufus’s scent. I’m certain they were yours.”
Claire’s heart pounded. Barely able to contain her excitement, she grabbed Aurora’s arm.
“Where are the eggs now?”
Aurora patted her hand.
“Don’t worry. As soon as they arrived, I had the folks start incubating them. They haven’t hatched yet, but judging by the timing, they should be coming out soon.”
A flood of joy rushed through Claire. Her whole body trembled. It felt so unreal that she almost couldn’t believe it.
“They’re alive… My babies… they’re alive!”
Overwhelmed with happiness, Claire burst into tears.
