Chapter 308 Cold
Claire shot her a look.

“Don’t think being a female gives you the right to do whatever you please. You’d better start atoning for wha you’ve done, because the fox clan won’t let this go.”
With that, Claire turned and walked out, ignoring the furious cursing Fiona hurled at her back.
Corvin cinched the vines tight around the wooden barrel, sealing it shut so Fiona could never climb out again.
Before he shut the small door, he took one last look down at Fiona trapped inside, his voice carrying the weight of something that belonged in the darkest pit imaginable.
“Enjoy getting eaten alive by poisonous insects, one slow bite at a time.”
“No! I’ve learned my lesson! Corvin, let me out! I don’t want to be a vessal! Claire, you spiteful female, youll pay for this, I swear I won’t let this go!”
Outside the tree house, Claire listened to the faint, furious screaming drifting out from inside, and “satisfaction settled warm through her chest.
Worry about getting out first. Though honestly, I don’t think that’s happening for you, not in this lifetime.”
Corvin stood in the doorway of the tree house, the sunlight stopping short about a foot and a half from where he stood, his sharp, cold features swallowed in shadow. He watched Davy lift Claire into his arms and
carry carry her away, watched until she’d faded completely from view.
He murmured under his breath, “Almost there. It’s almost time.”
Then he shifted back into his true form, a massive black crow, and flew up to the nest waiting at the top of the tree, settling back in to continue incubating the eggs.
On the way back, Claire rested her head against the side of Davy’s face and asked him a question.
“Davy, do you think I’m cruel?”
The image of Fiona’s misery still hung fresh in her mind, that shrill, desperate screaming still echoing somewhere behind her ears.
And yet she couldn’t find a single trace of pity anywhere inside herself. All she felt was satisfaction.
Davy shook his head without even needing to think about it.
“You call that cruel? The people of my clan turn on each other before they’ve even hatched. That’s real cruelty. You’re the kindest person I know.”
The corner of Claire’s mouth curled up slightly, a bright flicker of pleasure dancing in her eyes.
“Beast World runs on the strong preying on the weak, and fine, I can live with that, But I will never allow anyone to threaten my family.”

Just as they were about to reach the tree house, the two of them crossed paths with Landon and Altair.
The pair seemed to be waiting for someone, and the moment they spotted Claire, they hurried over with wide smiles.
Landon laughed warmly.
“Claire, word is you’ve bonded with a new beast mate. We came by specifically to see for ourselves.”
Davy’s expression darkened as he looked the two of them over.
Every instinct in his body screamed that these beastfolk meant Claire no good.
Claire tried to jump down from Davy’s shoulder, but his hand held her firmly in place, so she simply nodded and smiled at Landon instead.
“That’s right.”
Altair’s face carried a flicker of displeasure, and his next words landed with obvious intent.
“Does Rufus know about this? Right now he’s out in the Sacred Grounds, fighting for his life without any guarantee he’ll come back, and here you are, eating well, sleeping well, and bonding with a brand new beast mate like nothing’s wrong.”
The moment the words left Altair’s mouth, Landon grabbed his arm hard, trying to signal him to stop talking.
But Claire’s expression had already gone cold. Her eyes curved into a smile that never once reached them. This beastfolk named Altair clearly couldn’t mind his own business.
She spoke.
“Rufus is only my second mate, and even if he were my first, if I decided with absolute certainty to bond with another male, he’d have no right to stop me. He chose to go to the Sacred Grounds on his own. Just because he’s suffering out there doesn’t mean I’m required to suffer right alongside him instead of eating and living well here.”
Altair had nothing to say to that. The more he thought it over, the more he realized Claire had a point.
Still, something in his chest ached on Rufus’ behalf.
The Rufus he remembered used to move through life so free and unburdened, and now here he was, reduced to sharing one female with other males. Even Altair found the whole situation suffocating to think about.
“But still…”
Altair opened his mouth to say more, only for Landon to shoot him a sharp, warning glare.
Davy stared Altair down without blinking, the three beast marks etched across his face seeming to stir with life, their color deepening into something darker.

His gaze locked onto Altair, steady and vicious, as if the smallest nod from Claire would send him lunging forward to tear the man apart on the spot.
Altair’s face flushed red. He was only Level 1, and standing in front of a Level 3 beastfolk left him about as sturdy as wet paper. He wouldn’t last more than a moment in a real fight.
Landon jumped in quickly to smooth things over.
“Claire, let me apologize on his behalf. Altair has a sharp tongue, but he doesn’t actually mean any of it the way it sounds.”
