Chapter 309 Chopping Wood
With Claire’s permission secured, Davy headed off toward the edge of the clan grounds.

The large trees inside the clan boundaries were all reserved for building tree houses and couldn’t be cut down without permission, so he’d need to venture into the forest just beyond the territory line.
Wood grew there in endless supply, more than anyone could ever use up.
Davy returned before long, carrying the freshly cut wooden door and bed frame slung over his shoulder
He fit the door into the frame with a few quick, practiced motions, and it settled into place perfectly.
Next, he carefully cleared away the shattered remains of the old broken bed frame and installed the new one in its place.
Davy clapped his hands together, admiring the finished bed with obvious satisfaction, then lay down on it to test it out himself. Both the length and the width came out exactly right.
He went to pull Claire over to see it, only to find her standing there with her arms crossed, studying the wooden bed with a look that carried far more meaning than the moment called for.
“Davy, you only built one bed. Does that mean you’re expecting to sleep beside me every single night?”
“Huh? Is that not allowed?”
Davy scratched the back of his head, a few wood shavings still caught in his hair.
Marcus’s voice rang out from behind them.
“Of course that’s not allowed. What are you even thinking? We’re all her beast mates, so we should take turns. It’s my turn tonight, right, Claire?”
Marcus threw himself forward, pressing against Claire and nuzzling into her with constant, affectionate motion, like a puppy reuniting with its owner after far too long apart.
His ribbon sat perfectly intact, but a faint scent of sweat clung to him, that clean, hormone-laced kind of sweat that carried no unpleasant edge at all.
Claire remembered Marcus had gone hunting earlier that day, and seeing him return safely now filled her with the kind of proud, warm relief a parent feels watching their child take their first successful steps at preschool.
She ran her fingers through Marcus’s hair, unable to hide the smile pulling at her eyes.
“I honestly have no idea whose turn it is. You’ll have to ask Zane about that. Let him sort out the schedule. I’m fine with whatever he decides.”
She prided herself on staying perfectly fair, refusing to play favorites with any of them.
Marcus wrapped his arms around Claire’s waist, pouting with obvious longing.
“Claire…”

His voice came out sweet and syrupy, the last word stretched out long.
Claire pretended to look annoyed and scolded him playfully.

“Pouting won’t get you anywhere. The night before I bonded with Davy, weren’t you the one who talked Zane into it?”
The moment she brought it up, the memory of that night came flooding back into Marcus’s mind.
He couldn’t see anything that had happened, but he could easily imagine just how wild that hight must have been.
Marcus’s face flushed bright red instantly.
He desperately wanted to do it all again.
But Claire would absolutely never agree to that.
At Claire’s insistence, Davy made another trip into the forest and hauled back a second, heavier bed frame.
The tree house they’d originally been using for storage had already filled up completely with belongings, and Claire couldn’t be bothered to clear it all out. That particular tree house also sat cramped and narrow, something she honestly hadn’t thought through at the time.
That meant they’d need to build Davy an entirely new tree house of his own now.
Zane carried some fresh meat over to the chief’s home, hoping to ask whether the eagle clan followed any particular customs when it came to building a tree house.
By the time Zane returned, two beastfolk trailed behind him, none other than Landon and Altair.
Both males stood tall, one practically beaming with enthusiasm, the other shifting awkwardly in place.
Claire studied the two male beastfolk standing in front of her once again, confusion settling over her.
Zane explained the situation.
“The chief said these two could help us build a tree house up in the branches. Two days, and it’ll be finished.”
He started to introduce the two beastfolk properly, only to notice Davy glaring with open hostility at the one named Altair.
“You two already know each other?” he asked.
Claire smiled and pulled Zane aside, repeating everything Altair had said earlier, which made Zane’s brow furrow deeper with every word.
“Should I just send them both back, then? We can build the tree house ourselves. It might take a little longer, but we can manage.”
After all, the eagle clan had lived in tree houses for generations and had long since mastered the craft of building them, which meant they’d certainly work faster than a pair of complete amateurs like themselves.

The moment Landon heard they might get sent away, he stepped forward quickly and started pitching himself for the job.
