Linda's eyes widened in horror, and she shrieked at the crowd around her.
"Did you hear that? Did you all hear what she just said?!"
A doctor standing nearby couldn't take it anymore and stepped forward.
"Bed 12, you have mild malnutrition. You're perfectly healthy. You've been loitering in this hospital since yesterday, refusing to leave and refusing to pay your bill. Why are you harassing your daughter like this? Is she even biologically yours?"
The bystanders chimed in, equally indignant.
"Exactly! Have you no shame? It's obvious you just favor the boy!"
"You have working hands and feet, but instead of getting a job, you're rolling around on the floor throwing a tantrum. Do you think whoever throws the biggest fit is in the right?"
Linda's face flushed bright red, and she cursed them out. "You don't know shit! She's my daughter, and providing for me is her sworn duty!"
She then shot a vicious glare at the doctor. "I'm telling you, my whole body hurts! I'm dying! If you can't figure out what's wrong with me, it's because you're an incompetent hack! How dare you stand there and lecture me?"
She thrashed around, completely devoid of logic, causing a massive disruption to the hospital's operations.
The officer sighed helplessly and looked at Chloe.
"Miss, she is your biological mother. Why don't you just give her a little money to smooth things over? If this keeps escalating, it'll reflect poorly on you too."
Linda scoffed. "The officer is right! Why are you being such a difficult brat? You're going to have to pay me sooner or later, so stop stalling! Stop wasting everyone's time!"
Leon hastily added, "And I need compensation for that slap! Medical fees, emotional distress, and yeah, lost wages and nutritional supplements!"
Linda's glare was so venomous that the people who had spoken up for Chloe shrank back, unwilling to invite further trouble.
A kind-hearted bystander gently tugged Chloe's sleeve and whispered a warning.
"Miss, your mother doesn't seem completely stable. Just treat it as paying a toll to avoid a disaster. Don't fight her head-on, or you'll just drag yourself down."
Under everyone's watchful eyes, Chloe, who had been completely silent, finally moved.
She offered a cold, mechanical smile and stared right at Linda.
Linda felt an inexplicable chill run down her spine, but a second later, her arrogance returned full force.
But Chloe simply nodded. "Okay."
She agreed so readily that Leon panicked.
"No! What is half a million going to do? Make it five million!"
He grabbed Linda, his eyes gleaming with sheer greed.
"Linda, do you know how much Preston is worth? Even a tiny slice of his assets would be an unimaginable fortune!"
Linda glanced at Chloe. Her eyes, usually blinded by dollar signs, inexplicably zeroed in on Chloe's hollow cheeks and pale skin.
She froze for a moment, but just as quickly, she averted her gaze.
"Let's not push her to the edge all at once. We've got plenty of time. If we run out, we'll just ask for more."
Leon thought that made sense and reluctantly agreed. "Fine, half a million for now."
The sheer audacity left the onlookers laughing in disbelief.
