The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 256

The officer turned to Chloe. "Don't be intimidated. You don't have to agree to their unreasonable demands."

"It's fine. It's just half a million."

Chloe looked down and unzipped her purse.

First, she pulled out a twenty-dollar bill and a five-dollar bill, slapping them against Leon's chest.

"Here's your medical fee."

Leon scowled impatiently. "That's it? Are you tossing pennies at a beggar?"

"Because you're not worth a full hundred," Chloe said dryly. "Twenty-five is already too generous."

Leon was furious, but keeping that half a million in mind, he swallowed his anger.

"Where's the half a million? You agreed to that, right?"

"Of course."

Chloe reached back into her bag.

A bystander couldn't help but speak up. "Miss, don't do anything rash. People like them are bottomless pits. You give it to them once, and they'll come back for seconds. They'll just keep getting worse!"

Chloe offered a slight smile. "Thank you, but it's fine. I don't think I'll have the chance to give them anymore anyway."

With that, she pulled out a thick stack of paper currency and tossed it at Linda.

Overjoyed, Linda reached out to catch it.

But a second later, her face froze completely.

Chloe smiled faintly. "Sorry, I probably won't be around when you die, so I can only give you your funereal scrip in advance. There's exactly half a million here. Why don't you count it and see if it's enough? If not, I have more in my bag."

"Oh, by the way, do you want to burn it yourself, or should I help you burn it right now?"

"..." Linda stared at the ghastly white spirit money in her hands, her whole body breaking into a violent tremble.

The entire hallway descended into absolute, suffocating silence.

"Chloe!"

Linda's body and voice shook in unison, swaying as if she might faint.

"Are you cursing me to die?!"

Chloe looked at her wounded expression, frowned, and felt a wave of disgust wash over her.

"Mr... Mr. Hayes... What are you doing here? I thought you and Chloe..."

Preston had appeared far too suddenly. His expression was absolutely freezing, and while he looked a little ragged from rushing over, his aura was downright terrifying.

He didn't give Leon a chance to speak. Taking a large stride forward, he threw another brutal punch.

"Didn't I tell you to never show your face in front of Chloe again?"

"Do you think I was joking?"

Blood splattered as Leon's horrific wails echoed down the hospital corridor.

The police rushed forward to stop him, but they couldn't hold back a completely unhinged Preston.

One punch after another, fueled by rage and heartache, rained down in a gruesome display.

Linda was scared out of her wits, but since no one could stop him, she could only scream at Chloe.

"Stop him! Are you just going to stand there and watch Leon get beaten to death?"

Chloe stood on the sidelines, her heart devoid of a single ripple.

It felt as if her soul had detached from her body, floating somewhere near the ceiling. She had no idea how she was supposed to react.
