Inside the gate, the expansive lawn glowed a vibrant green under the sunlight, and early spring flowers were blooming sparsely, radiating a sense of new life.
The interior was bright, the floors polished to a mirror shine.
In the spacious living room, the faint chirping of insects drifted in from outside the window.
Everything was exactly the same as it had been three years ago.
Chloe walked through each room, a lump forming in her throat.
After washing away the exhaustion of her journey, she lay on her own bed. Her heart, which had been suspended in uncertainty for so long, finally found its anchor.
She felt like someone learning to walk all over again. Her hearing wasn't completely healed, and the future still held many unknowns.
But she wasn't afraid anymore.
Drowsy and comfortable, Chloe soon fell asleep.
By the time she woke up, it was completely dark outside.
The last glow of sunset had slowly faded from the horizon.
Chloe stared blankly for a long time before remembering where she was.
She fumbled for the switch in the dark, turning on the lights from pure muscle memory.
Her phone screen showed it was six-thirty in the evening.
Her brand-new phone only had a few contacts, and there wasn't a single new message.
Chloe pushed open the glass doors of the living room, standing by the garden and staring blankly at the foreign sky.
Just then, a rich, mouth-watering aroma wafted over from the other side of the courtyard wall.
Quentin's voice drifted from next door. "You're awake?"
Chloe jumped slightly in surprise.
He continued, "Come over if you're up. The hot pot is almost ready."
"Hot pot?"
Her stomach growled right on cue. Chloe ran out eagerly and knocked on the door next door.
Quentin answered the door.
He was wearing dark gray loungewear, his collar casually loosened. With slightly messy hair, he lacked his usual icy demeanor, replaced by a relaxed, lazy softness.
"Looks like we need to put a gate in the wall so it's easier to visit."
Chloe walked in and saw the table in the yard completely covered with ingredients. She asked in astonishment, "Did you haul all this over from the country? There's so much!"
She sat straight down, noticing Quentin had even prepped her dipping sauce.
Gabriel White's frantic face suddenly flashed through his mind.
"Why do you always bring up work the moment you see her? You're going to regret this!"
Quentin shook his head, pushing away the chaotic thoughts, and turned back inside.
Having slept enough during the day, Chloe was completely wide awake that night, so she decided to organize her materials for the next day.
The next morning, when she walked out of her yard, Quentin emerged at the exact same time.
He handed her a bento box. "Morning."
Chloe took it out of habit. Looking at the perfectly balanced ingredients inside, she couldn't help but say, "Quentin, you really don't have to prep lunch for me every day."
Quentin looked at her. "Sick of my cooking already?"
"No..." Chloe quickly explained.
"It's no trouble, just making extra while I cook."
Quentin got into the car.
Holding the bento box, Chloe followed him inside.
From the moment she stepped out of her house to the second she got in the car, Bob's eyes were glued to her.
