Belle poured every ounce of her acting ability into the performance. But Ken saw right through it.
"Ms. Evans, I know you're fully aware of where she is."
"But, I understand. Since I am technically off the clock, if you really want to know, I can assure you Mr. Hayes has no intention of giving up easily."
Belle fell silent for a long moment before snapping in frustration,
"Seriously, what is his problem? They're divorced! Why is he still obsessing over her?"
"And another thing, stop calling her his 'wife'! She doesn't belong to anyone!"
Ken listened quietly.
Belle demanded, "How far along is his investigation?"
"I'm sorry, I can't discuss that."
The rustling of fabric echoed through the phone as Ken finished knotting his tie.
"Goodbye." He hung up.
Belle: "..."
She sent a text to Chloe:
[Chloe, I think Preston is a psycho. But don't worry, I won't tell him a thing!!]
She tacked on an emoji swearing an oath.
At the UN Sterling Interpretation Institute, in the top-floor office.
Chloe picked up her phone, read the message, and typed back:
[Did he bother you?]
Belle: [He's tried a few times, but don't worry, he's not getting anything out of me!]
Chloe: [Okay. Thank you. I'll treat you to dinner when you get here.]
Belle: [Looking forward to it.jpg]
Suddenly, the office landline rang.
Chloe set her phone down and picked up the receiver. "Hello?"
A male voice drifted through the line.
"Is this Mr. Quentin Shaw's office?"
That single sentence made Chloe freeze instantly.
It was Preston's voice!
When she didn't respond, he spoke again.
"Mr. Hayes, the files you asked for."
"Caroline Monet did post on Twitter today, clarifying her professional connections. But all the talk of a comeback is purely media speculation."
Preston snapped back to reality. "Find the audio recordings of my interpretation from the last two summits, and Mr. Lawson's as well."
"Then find Caroline Monet's past interpretation recordings and bring them all to me."
Ken nodded. "Understood."
Preston suddenly spoke up, his voice tight. "Ken, do you think... Chloe... could be Caroline Monet?"
"What?" Ken froze.
He had never really paid attention to the interpretation industry before.
But after digging up the files for Preston, he had quickly learned just how legendary Caroline was.
There were plenty of hard-working people in the world. But people with her level of raw talent were one in a million.
Truthfully, Ken had never once connected Chloe Reed to Caroline Monet. His immediate reaction was that the idea was completely absurd.
"Probably not..."
He wanted to point out that if Chloe truly was Caroline Monet, a woman who had climbed to the absolute pinnacle of her field even with hearing damage, why would she ever abandon her career just to play the role of a devoted housewife?
