"Everyone's hoping the institute fires her over this. Someone like her has absolutely no right being Dr. Sharpe's assistant," Belle read aloud.
Rhonda hadn't met Dr. Sharpe personally, but she knew of her stellar reputation. "Wait, what? Jenna is Dr. Sharpe's assistant?"
"Yeah! Unbelievable, right?" Belle continued to vent her frustrations.
Chloe checked her phone.
She noticed a new message from Dr. Sharpe.
[Is your business handled?]
Chloe knew her mentor was referring to the search for John.
[Almost done.]
Dr. Sharpe replied: [Good. Then I won't fire Jenna just yet.]
Chloe stared at the text in surprise.
Dr. Sharpe wasn't the type to explain her motives to anyone.
Moments later, another text came through:
[If you need help, just ask.]
Warmth bloomed in Chloe’s chest. After a moment of hesitation, she typed a quick reply:
[Thank you, Dr. Sharpe.]
She hit send.
Across the ocean, on the other side of the world...
"Dr. Sharpe, what's got you smiling like that?"
A stunning middle-aged woman affectionately teased the usually stoic Liana Sharpe.
Dr. Sharpe set her phone down, her rare smile lingering. "My disciple."
"A disciple?" Sonya Rowe’s interest was instantly piqued. "You mean Caroline Monet?"
Dr. Sharpe nodded, her smile deepening.
"Didn't she retire? You found her again?" Sonya asked. "No wonder you've been in such a great mood lately."
Dr. Sharpe glanced at her. "If you had a student this brilliant, you'd be this happy too."
Sonya paused for a second before bursting into laughter, wrapping an arm around her friend. "Oh, so you're just showing off now? Watch out, I might just poach her from you!"
The nearby assistants sucked in a collective breath.
