"If even you're speaking this highly of her, I simply have to meet her next time," Sonya said.
"You will," Dr. Sharpe promised. "Definitely."
...
An hour after Chloe sent the video of the Brass Astrolabe, Asher Vane reached out.
[When are you available? I need to see it in person.]
Chloe made him wait half an hour before replying.
[I need to negotiate the price directly with Mr. John first.]
Asher replied: [I can't let you meet him until I've verified its authenticity.]
Chloe scoffed and locked her screen.
Sure enough, Asher couldn't hold out much longer.
[Let’s meet. If it’s genuine, I’ll call Mr. John right then and there. Is that acceptable?]
Another message followed shortly after:
[Or, if you have any other demands, name them.]
Chloe typed: [Three days from now.]
She sent him the address of a familiar spot in The Republic of Veritas.
Asher simply responded: [Agreed.]
Having wrapped up everything in her hometown, Rhonda was preparing to head back to Sterling Bay.
Chloe and Belle booked tickets for the following day to return to Veritas.
But before she left, Chloe had one last place she needed to visit.
When Chloe pulled up to the foot of Verdant Peak with a car packed full of supplies, two fluffy little shapes launched themselves at her without warning.
As she got a good look at the furballs, she froze in shock.
Yuri wagged his tail frantically, jumping up on her legs.
It had been so long, and the little dog missed her terribly, vibrating with pure, unadulterated excitement.
Next to him was another dog, clearly just as fascinated by Chloe, happily nuzzling against her legs.
Chloe crouched down and scooped Yuri into her arms, her eyes instantly brimming with tears.
"Yuri, Yuri... You're safe. I missed you so much!"
But why was Yuri suddenly here?
