Chloe shot back, "Have you not done exactly that in the past?"
Preston froze, at a complete loss for words.
His Adam's apple bobbed as he tried to form an explanation.
But Chloe was already done listening. "Get the hell out. I don't want to look at you anymore."
As the heavy silence dragged on, the two fluffy shapes bounded back toward them from across the yard.
Preston crouched down and scooped up both dogs, one in each arm.
"Where have you two been running off to?"
He looked back at Chloe, acting as if their argument had never happened.
"This is Yuri, and this is Teddy."
Chloe snatched Yuri from his arms. "What kind of nonsense is that?"
She patted Yuri’s fur as if dusting off a layer of grime.
"Good boy, Yuri. Don't listen to his garbage. We don't want to dirty your ears..."
Preston let out a frustrated chuckle.
He said, "I hate to break it to you, Chloe, but he's my dog now."
"Isn't it perfectly normal for my dog to take my last name? Teddy Hayes has a nice ring to it."
Chloe rolled her eyes in sheer annoyance.
Preston said, "Glaring at me won't change anything. Unless..."
He leaned in, his arm sliding smoothly around her waist.
"Our dogs could take your last name instead..."
"Chloe," his voice dropped to a soft, husky murmur, his eyes dark and heavy with a desperate, calculated affection.
"Chloe..."
He murmured her name over and over again.
"Please, Chloe?"
Every hair on Chloe’s body stood on end. She shoved hard against his chest.
But Preston anticipated the move effortlessly. He caught her wrists and pulled her firmly against him.
Knocked off balance, Chloe collided with his solid chest.
She instantly swore at him.
Preston merely curved his lips into a tender smile.
"What am I going to do with you? You push me away so much that I've gotten used to it..."
