Chloe fought to keep her expression neutral. "Fine."
Her gaze drifted toward the window.
It was pitch black outside.
In the distance, the dim streetlamp cast the man's shadow, stretching it long and thin against the ground, projecting an overwhelming sense of desolation.
But all Chloe felt was suffocating pressure.
She instinctively analyzed his motives with deep cynicism.
She couldn't fathom any reason for this grand display of suffering other than manipulating her into letting Jenna off the hook.
"Don't worry, Chloe. I absolutely won't let him in! I'll go chase him off right now!"
Mr. Lynch quickly grabbed a jacket, cracked the door open just enough to slip through, and hurried outside.
Not long after, he returned, his brow heavily furrowed as he let out a heavy sigh.
"That boy is just too stubborn."
No matter what he said, Preston refused to leave.
What was the point of all this suffering?
Chloe stated plainly, "Mr. Lynch, he's a grown adult. Whatever choices he makes, he brings upon himself."
Mr. Lynch nodded slowly. "You're right. He brought this on himself."
He sat down on the sofa and forced himself to stop looking out the window.
He knew Chloe.
She didn't have a cruel bone in her body.
If she was acting this ruthlessly cold, it could only mean Preston had pushed her beyond her breaking point, inflicting a level of pain that completely shattered her heart.
Thinking of this, a bitter ache settled in Mr. Lynch's chest. He hurt for Chloe, and hated himself for still feeling a shred of pity for Preston.
It was nearly midnight.
Chloe closed her laptop and noticed Mr. Lynch was still sitting rigidly on the sofa.
"Mr. Lynch, it's so late. Aren't you going to get some rest?"
The TV was playing, but Mr. Lynch jumped slightly, as if snapping out of a trance.
"Oh! Oh, I'm not tired yet. I'll just watch a little more TV."
Chloe walked over to the window. Sure enough, the figure was still standing there in the cold.
She stayed silent for a moment before speaking.
