The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 387

Mr. Lynch frowned. "What could possibly be so important that it has to be said tonight?"

Just then, a call came through from the driver. The car was parked just down the road.

Chloe averted her gaze, refusing to spare Preston another glance.

"I'm leaving, Mr. Lynch. Take care of yourself."

Preston froze. He instinctively reached out to grab her, but forced his hand back right before making contact.

"Chloe..."

His voice was heartbreakingly soft. "Can you just hear me out?"

Chloe didn't look back. "We have nothing left to talk about."

"Chloe," Preston pressed on, his eyes locked on her. "Your island... I had the construction finished. Let's go see it together tomorrow, okay?"

"We can pick up Grandma and Mr. Lynch, and we can all spend a few days on the island together."

"I promise you're going to love it..."

"Do you honestly think I’d want to step foot on an island where I was abandoned all alone?" Chloe finally turned around.

The sheer coldness in her gaze made Preston flinch.

"Chloe..."

He paused, scrambling to explain. "I had an emergency that day. Didn't I come looking for you the second I was done?"

Chloe didn't waste her breath. She spun around and walked briskly to the waiting car, pulling the door shut behind her. "Driver, step on it."

The engine roared to life. As the chilly night air whipped through the cracked window and hit her face, the suffocating tightness in her chest finally began to ease.

Her phone buzzed.

Dr. Sharpe had sent a text: [Are you coming back tomorrow?]

Assuming it was work-related, Chloe quickly typed back: [I should arrive by tomorrow afternoon.]

Dr. Sharpe's reply caught her completely off guard: [Join me for dinner tomorrow night.]

Chloe blinked.

This was the first time Dr. Sharpe had ever reached out to her for something purely personal and social.

[I'd love to.]

The moment she hit send, the driver cursed under his breath.

"Thinks he owns the road just 'cause he drives a luxury car. The hell is he riding my bumper for?"
