Before Winona could even react, she heard Willow's disapproving voice.
"Winona, you are so out of line."
Wynne rushed to Ophelia's side, her face etched with concern.
Willow ordered a housekeeper to call for a doctor and had someone else lead Ophelia to a bedroom to rest.
After Wynne and Ophelia had left, Willow turned her glare on Winona.
"Winona, do you have an explanation? Why did you just push Ophelia?"
"I didn't," Winona stated coldly.
She hadn't even touched Ophelia.
Willow scoffed. "So Ophelia just fell over by herself for no reason?"
Yulen looked at Winona, his brow furrowed. "I know you didn't mean to, but you should still go and apologize to Ms. Powell."
Winona found the situation laughable. She hadn't done it, and they had no proof. Yet here they were, all passing judgment on her.
"I said I didn't do it. I'm not apologizing."
Whatever happened, she wasn't taking the blame for this.
"Winona," Yulen's voice turned cold. "Is this really the time to be so stubborn?"
Just as the tension reached its peak, a murmur spread through the crowd.
"Mr. Goddard is here."
Moments later, Stefan was escorted in by the butler.
The Locke family relatives stared at Stefan in astonishment. They couldn't believe that for Willow's birthday, they had not only managed to invite Mrs. Powell, but also the future head of the capital's Goddard family.
Willow was just as surprised. She had no idea she carried that much influence.
Then it occurred to her: the Goddard and Powell families were close. Perhaps Wynne had invited him. Besides, she'd heard rumors that Stefan and Ophelia were being considered for a match. With Wynne as a connection, it would be much easier for the Lockes to build a relationship with the Goddards.
At this thought, she immediately beamed and went to greet him.
Willow had a housekeeper show him to the bedroom.
The mood for cake was ruined. Willow had the staff slice it up for the guests before she also went to see Ophelia.
Yulen walked over to Winona and demanded, "You know Stefan well?"
"Not really," Winona said flatly.
"Not well? Then why did he just defend you in front of all these people?"
Winona let out a derisive laugh. "I'd like to know that too. How is it that even a stranger believes in my character, but my own husband doesn't?"
Yulen was speechless.
Winona continued, "It's because you only care about the Locke family's interests, not my feelings. You're afraid of offending the Powells, so regardless of who was right or wrong, you just wanted me to apologize."
"That's not it."
A strange sense of panic hit Yulen all at once. He wanted to explain, but Winona didn't give him the chance.
