As Stefan met Winona’s grateful gaze, he remembered their kiss from the night before, and a strange heat stirred within him. He suppressed the odd sensation, his tone remaining cool. “Go get some rest.”
“Okay.”
After watching his car drive away, Winona returned to her apartment. She took off his suit jacket and noticed her clothes still carried his scent. The memory of them sleeping in the same bed made her face flush again.
Shaking the image from her mind, she patted her cheeks and went into the bathroom to shower. At ten o'clock that night, her phone buzzed with a message from Stefan. It was just a single photo. Lachlan was lying in a hospital bed, his left arm and left leg in casts.
Winona then understood that Stefan had gotten revenge for her. While grateful, she also worried about him. What if Ophelia got angry at him for this?
Though she couldn't quite understand his actions, she replied with a simple “Thank you.”
Feeling that a mere thank you was insufficient, she added, “If you’re free tomorrow night, Mr. Goddard, I’d like to treat you to dinner.”
Reading her message, Stefan let out a soft laugh and replied, “Okay.”
The next evening, Winona finished her work early and prepared to head to Stefan’s villa in Riverton. She had learned that morning that he had taken the day off. It seemed her kick had indeed injured him. She wondered where he was hurt and how serious it was.
She stopped by a pharmacy near the office to buy some get-well gifts and then took a cab. When she arrived at Stefan’s house and rang the doorbell, no one answered.
Suddenly, Stefan spoke, his voice hoarse. “That’s enough.”
Thinking she had done a poor job, Winona asked with some surprise, “Is it uncomfortable?”
Any more of this, and he was afraid he would lose all control. He took a deep breath, trying to keep his voice steady. “No, it feels much better.”
Winona withdrew her hands, still feeling guilty. “If you’re still uncomfortable in the next few days, I can come over anytime to help.”
A low chuckle escaped Stefan. “Ms. Jowett, is there any pain you can’t relieve?”,
