The Wife He Forgot to Marry novel Chapter 46

“Winona’s probably just giving me the silent treatment,” Yulen told Camille over the phone. “I’ll talk to her. She’s always been good at self-reflection. Once she realizes she’s in the wrong, I’m sure she’ll be back at work.”

Camille, knowing how much Winona loved Yulen, didn’t doubt his words. “Alright, but don’t forget to handle it.”

After hanging up, Yulen went to Winona’s office. He couldn’t help but chuckle when he saw that her mug, pillow, and blanket were still there. She was definitely just pouting. If she had truly wanted to leave, she wouldn't have left these things behind.

After resting at her apartment for two days, Winona started at Jericho’s lab. The lab was managed by a good-natured young man named Killian, who introduced Winona to the team. Everyone was stunned by her beauty. Eloise, who had been the lab’s reigning queen, scowled as she felt herself being upstaged. She and the others had passed rigorous interviews and written exams to get in, but Winona had seemingly waltzed in without any assessment. Eloise was convinced she had gotten the job through connections.

Winona settled in at her desk. Killian handed her a few files to familiarize herself with the lab’s projects before getting back to his own work. At noon, the women from the lab went out for lunch together, but no one invited Winona. While they admired her beauty, they were also jealous. Coupled with the suspicion that she had a powerful backer, they kept their distance.

Winona wasn’t a particularly outgoing person anyway, so she simply got lunch on her own and returned to reading the project files. Killian noticed her diligent attitude and came over to ask if she needed any help. Winona took the opportunity to ask a few questions about the projects, which Killian answered in detail. When Eloise returned and saw them discussing professional matters, she was even more convinced Winona was just putting on an act and her disdain grew.

She sat down and started texting her college friend, Daphne, about Winona. Daphne was surprised to hear Winona was at Jericho’s lab.

With that, she left.

Convinced the data was flawed, Winona stayed late and redid the entire test. The next morning, after she submitted the corrected report to Jericho, he praised both her and Eloise in the work group chat. Eloise was basking in the compliment until she saw the report and realized it wasn't the one she had written. Her face burned with embarrassment. Instead of thanking Winona, however, she felt she had overstepped.

After lunch, Eloise stopped Winona by the doorway. “Don’t think you’ve proven anything by submitting accurate data,” she hissed, her teeth clenched. “Winona, we’ll see about this.”

Then she stormed off.
