Even while being scolded, Sylvan was thrilled. This was the most Wynne had spoken to him in ages; his eyes even welled up with emotion.
Giselle felt incredibly smug.
Once this party was over, she would become the golden girl everyone envied. As long as those shares were in her name, she would never have to worry about money again. She could live her life extravagantly, never having to bow her head to anyone.
That night, she agreed to Felix Hale's invitation to go drinking at a club.
After getting sufficiently buzzed, they took his car out for a joyride.
With the night wind blowing through her hair, Giselle felt her future was blindingly bright. Sure, everything she had was stolen from Winona, but she felt absolutely no guilt. Winona's inability to reunite with her real family was just her own bad luck. Unlucky people deserved to rot in the dirt.
Suddenly, Felix's car smashed into a street stall.
The elderly vendor was knocked to the ground, groaning in pain.
Felix casually tossed a thick stack of cash out the window and sped off without a second thought.
Giselle laughed. "Are we going to get arrested?"
Felix roared with laughter. "It's just some broken property! I have more than enough money to make this go away."
Seeing how utterly confident and fearless he was, Giselle smiled. She used to envy the reckless, unbridled lives of the rich kids. Now, she was one of them.
A thrilling tremor ran through her body—she felt reborn.
The next morning at 10:30, Giselle woke up in bed to a phone call from the police station.
She and Felix had been caught on camera drunk driving and hitting an old man's stall the night before. The man had suffered a fracture and was hospitalized. They were ordered to come in for a statement.
A bit panicked, she called Felix.
"It's fine," he laughed easily. "This kind of thing has happened before. My dad will take care of it."
Sitting in her car, Giselle remembered her days abroad. Once, she had offended a rich girl and ended up being beaten in a restroom, forced to kneel and apologize. Afterward, the girl threw a wad of cash at her to keep her mouth shut.
And just like that, the incident vanished.
She had been so humiliated and furious back then, but totally powerless.
Now, she was the one standing at the top of the pyramid. She could humiliate anyone she wanted with her wealth.
Sitting in the driver's seat, she laughed until tears spilled down her cheeks.
Tears for the pathetic, stifled girl she used to be.
Tears for the omnipotent woman she was now.
She wiped her face and whispered to herself, "Giselle Reed, from now on, no one will ever make you suffer again."
