With that, she chugged her water and left in high spirits.
Stefan didn't get home until half past midnight.
When he heard what happened to Biscuit, his expression instantly hardened.
Even though Winona assured him the situation was handled, the cold fury in his eyes remained unmistakable.
The next day, the property manager updated Winona: Lance and his wife had agreed to cover all the medical bills and were officially moving out of the complex. The pitbull had already been sent away.
Winona nodded. "Understood."
As long as the hazard was removed from the neighborhood, she was willing to drop the issue.
What the manager didn't tell her, however, was the rest of the fallout: Lance had been unceremoniously fired, his credit cards were entirely frozen, and his luxury car had been repossessed by his brother-in-law.
The apartment they had been living in actually belonged to that same brother-in-law. When they packed up, they were only allowed to take their clothes. Not a single piece of jewelry or expensive antique left the premises with them.
From here on out, their lives were going to be significantly rougher.
The property manager had also been docked three months' pay as a penalty.
He took it without complaint—as long as he hadn't been fired, he considered himself incredibly lucky.

A week later, Karina showed up for the assistant interview at Winona's lab.
She dressed incredibly low-key, picking the cheapest outfit from her closet. She didn't wear a single piece of jewelry and kept her makeup minimal.
Even so, Lucinda Larson, the HR manager, immediately recognized the subtle signs of extreme wealth by glancing at Karina's bag.
Lucinda had a friend who worked at a high-end boutique, and from casually scrolling her social media feed, Lucinda knew that specific bag cost a cool seven figures.
Lucinda asked a few standard background questions.
Karina played it extremely humble, her attitude flawless.
Smiling, Lucinda asked, "Ms. Shepherd, it seems your financial situation is quite comfortable. Why exactly are you applying for an entry-level assistant position?"
While their lab was one of the best in Riverton, a wealthy heiress shouldn't realistically be interested in doing grunt work.
Karina immediately replied, "I feel my practical skills are still lacking, so I want to challenge myself and build up my experience from the ground level."
"Will do," Lucinda agreed.
When Karina got home, she told her dad about the interview.
Jasper asked, "Are you confident?"
"Dad, I absolutely nailed it," Karina declared confidently.
"Really?" Jasper was highly skeptical.
Karina beamed. "Of course! I actually think Winona likes me. I mean, I'm practically made of good qualities—who wouldn't like me?"
Jasper rolled his eyes in exasperation.
He loved his daughter, but he knew exactly what she was like.
Karina had ten times as many flaws as she had virtues.
It seemed this job offer was still very much up in the air.
