Wynne threw herself at the heavy metal door, pounding her fists against the frozen steel. "Winona! Are you in there?!"
Barely clinging to consciousness, Winona heard the muffled, frantic voice. She marshaled the last ounce of her strength and weakly kicked the door.
The faint thud sent a spike of pure adrenaline and terror through Wynne's veins.
"You're in there! Hold on, I'm going to get you out!"
Wynne bolted into the kitchen, screaming for someone to open the door, but the restaurant manager stammered that the keys had gone missing.
Wynne's panic boiled into rage. "Break it down! My daughter is in there! My daughter is freezing to death! Find something and break it down now!"
The kitchen staff finally snapped into action. One of the larger chefs grabbed a heavy mallet and began viciously striking the lock, but the industrial steel wouldn't yield.
Wynne's heart hammered against her ribs. She looked up and spotted the small glass ventilation window near the top of the freezer.
She grabbed a metal stool, dragged it over, and climbed up.
Peering through the frosted glass, she saw Winona lying motionless on the icy floor, her face deathly pale.
A white-hot surge of agony ripped through Wynne's chest. It felt as if her own heart were being carved out.
She turned to the men behind her. "Smash the window!"
A waiter ran over with a heavy wrench and shattered the thick pane.
The window was narrow, and the men in the kitchen were all broad-shouldered. None of them could fit through the jagged opening.
Wynne didn't hesitate. "Boost me up! I can fit."
She was the smallest person in the room. It was the only way.
She scrambled onto the ledge, dragging herself through the shattered frame. The razor-sharp shards of glass sliced deep into her arms and legs, soaking her sleeves in blood, but she didn't even flinch.
She dropped onto a metal shelving unit inside, then quickly climbed down to the floor.
Wynne dropped to her knees, ripping off her own coat and wrapping it tightly around Winona's shivering body. Her bloody hands fumbled desperately as she untied the thick ropes binding Winona's wrists and ankles.
Winona's eyes fluttered open. She weakly gripped Wynne's bleeding arm. "My baby... my baby..."
Wynne pulled Winona tight against her chest, her voice breaking into a violent sob.
"Your baby is going to be fine! Mom is here. Don't be afraid... Mom will protect you. I'll protect you and your baby."
Winona's mind was hazy. "Mom?"
