Winona gave Waldo direct orders to dig into the man who locked her in the freezer.
Two days later, Waldo delivered the file. The man's name was Vince Charlton. He had targeted Winona because he received an anonymous offshore wire transfer of a hundred thousand dollars, with a promise of another nine hundred thousand once the job was done.
Vince was a degenerate gambler. He had already sold his house and land in his hometown to pay off debts, then moved to Riverton to work delivery jobs.
But he quickly racked up another half-million in underground gambling debt.
Desperate and backed into a corner, he received the anonymous text and decided to take the hit.
After locking Winona in the freezer, the remaining nine hundred thousand cleared his account. He paid off his bookies and planned to take the remaining cash back to the countryside to buy a new house and find a wife.
When Waldo's men dragged him in for questioning, Vince swore he had no idea who hired him. He had just taken a blind gamble on the text message.
Winona listened to the report with cold precision. "Keep digging. Now that Vince is in police custody, whoever hired him is going to panic. They'll try to silence him. The second they make a move, we'll have them."
After work, she went straight to the hospital to visit Wynne.
Ryder Powell was sitting by the bed.
"Mr. Powell," Winona greeted him warmly.
Ryder offered a kind, gentle smile. "Your mother is recovering beautifully. She insisted on waiting for you so we could all leave together."
Winona looked at Wynne with concern. "Are you absolutely sure you don't need another exam?"
"I'm fine, darling. It barely hurts anymore," Wynne beamed. "You haven't eaten dinner yet, have you? Let's grab something nearby."
Winona nodded.
Ryder quickly dispatched his assistant to finalize the discharge paperwork.
Half an hour later, they were seated in a private dining room at a high-end restaurant.
Ryder wasn't a man of many words, but Winona noticed that every single dish he ordered was specifically tailored to either her or Wynne's favorite flavors.
Winona was genuinely touched.
