Seeing that Yulen didn't believe Winona either, Tallulah felt a thrill of victory.
She looked at Winona with a sickeningly sweet smile. "Come on, Winona. Nobody is truly angry with you. You're a busy woman; it's totally understandable that you might have grabbed some expired items by mistake. We're just trying to help you. There's no need to be so aggressive."
Yulen nodded in agreement. "She's right, Winona. We're trying to protect you. Escalating this will only hurt your reputation."
Winona ignored them completely, keeping her eyes locked on the director. "I demand a lab test on the stomach contents. If the bacteria matches the exact brand of snacks I provided, I will take full responsibility. But if it doesn't, I refuse to be your scapegoat."
The director groaned. "Are you really going to drag this out? Testing everything is a massive logistical nightmare."
Winona's gaze was lethal. "I work in advanced medical research. Extracting a few food samples and running a bacterial culture is incredibly basic for me. It won't be a problem."
Backed into a corner, the director sighed. "Fine. I'll have the hospital staff preserve the samples for you to pick up."
"Thank you."
Off to the side, panic flared in Tallulah's chest.
What if Winona actually ran the tests?
Tallulah had ordered her assistant to buy dirt-cheap, expired cookies and quietly slip them into Winona's giveaway boxes. She had personally watched a few kids take a bite and spit them out in disgust.
The expired cookies were a completely different brand from the high-end snacks Winona had bought. If Winona ran the lab tests, Tallulah would be fully exposed. She'd be legally liable for poisoning orphans.
And worse, what would Yulen think of her?
Trembling, she secretly texted her assistant: *Go to the orphanage immediately. Dig through the trash. Find all the cookie wrappers and crumbs and get rid of them!*
An hour later, Winona and the director returned to the orphanage.
The director stared at the main trash bins, exhausted. "Ms. Jowett, are you seriously going to find answers in there?"
