Winona sighed, caught between amusement and annoyance. "And you didn't fight back?"

"I didn't want to set a bad example in front of the kid," Stefan said with a perfectly straight face.

Winona walked over and wrapped her arms around his waist. "I should have been there. I would have gladly cursed him out for you."

Stefan's lips curved into a satisfied smirk. The lingering jealousy he'd felt earlier vanished entirely.

On Wednesday evening, Stefan was stuck at the office, so Winona went to have dinner with Wynne Walden. Ryder Powell joined them shortly after. Before they even ordered, Ryder looked at Winona and said casually, "I recently built two commercial high-rises downtown in the Capital. I'm transferring the deeds—one to you, and one to Forrest Kane."
