Cheryl had locked horns with Daisy plenty of times and saw right through her pathetic little act. She tilted her head, mimicking Daisy's exaggerated sorrow.
"Oh, Daisy, darling," Cheryl purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Tonight is supposed to be a joyous celebration for Wynne and Winona. Why on earth are you bringing down the mood with your depressing theatrics?"
Daisy's carefully constructed expression cracked at the sheer disrespect in Cheryl's tone. She wasn't even ten years older than Cheryl, and thanks to her rigorous skincare routine, she looked just as youthful. But Daisy was a seasoned veteran at playing the victim. She quickly forced a fragile, apologetic smile.
"You're right, of course. It wasn't the right time. I just... my heart aches for everything Winona has been through. I couldn't help myself."
"I know you're just a softie at heart, Daisy," Cheryl shot back, her smile lethal. "Otherwise, you wouldn't have moved into our house to play house with my dad less than twenty-four hours after my mother passed away. We are all very aware of how 'kind' you are."
The collective gasp in the circle was audible. Cheryl had just publicly branded Daisy a homewrecker who danced on her mother's grave. The scandal had died down recently, but Cheryl's ruthless reminder brought it all rushing back. The socialites stared at Daisy, their expressions turning guarded and judgmental. Daisy felt a surge of homicidal rage, but she bit the inside of her cheek and kept her innocent facade intact.
"Your father was so good to me, and I just wanted to repay his kindness. When your family went through such a terrible tragedy, of course I stepped in to help. Cheryl... are you telling me you still resent me?"
