Karina grinned brightly. "I know, I know. I promise I'll put my back into it."
She used to absolutely despise children, but this was Winona's baby—Forrest's future nephew or niece. She was determined to be the best 'auntie' figure she could be.
That evening, Stefan arrived to pick Winona up. He watched with a complicated expression as Karina escorted Winona out, treating her as carefully as if she were made of spun glass.
Karina only breathed a sigh of relief once Winona was safely standing in front of Stefan. "Stefan, I took excellent care of Winona today. I didn't let a single scratch come near her!"
Both Winona and Stefan couldn't help but roll their eyes at her over-the-top dramatics.
After bidding her goodbye, they got into the car.
"If Karina ever gets on your nerves, I can transfer her elsewhere," Stefan offered from the driver's seat. "Goddard Group has plenty of pharmaceutical subsidiaries she could work for."
Winona laughed softly. "There's no need. She's actually very driven right now, and her temper has mellowed out a lot."
Stefan thought back to how explosive Karina used to be, snapping at anyone who looked at her wrong. Then again, growing up in environments like the Shepherd and Goddard families rarely produced mild-mannered people.
Once they were home, Stefan noticed Winona hadn't eaten much. "Are you exhausted lately? You're eating less and less."
Winona was already scrolling through her phone, browsing baby clothes online. "I'm not tired, I just don't have much of an appetite."
Stefan poured her a glass of warm water. "Let me know if you get hungry later tonight. I'll make you a midnight snack."
Winona hummed in agreement, leaning over to show him her screen so they could look at baby clothes together.
Stefan glanced at her digital cart. It was a mix of outfits for both boys and girls.
