"Mr. Powell is still in the hospital, and Powell Group desperately needs someone they can trust. Since I am recognized as a son of the Powell family, it's time I stepped up and took on my responsibilities."
Ryder Powell had recently had a heart-to-heart with Forrest, making it clear that his shares would be split equally between him and Winona.
He had even drawn up a formalized, notarized will to that effect.
To Forrest, biology didn't matter anymore. Ryder was a father to him in every way that counted.
Compared to Sylvan Scully, Forrest was far more willing to acknowledge Ryder as his true family.
That night, Winona mentioned Forrest's plan to Stefan.
"He talked to me about it beforehand," Stefan nodded. "Mr. Powell really does need a reliable proxy right now. Forrest is sharp, and I have complete faith he can handle the corporate politics. Plus, I have enough influence in the Capital City to watch his back."
Knowing Stefan would be there to guide her brother eased Winona's mind considerably.
On Saturday, Cheryl Goddard stopped by to visit.
Naturally, the conversation drifted to the drama happening in the Capital City.
"Daisy Falconer and I are basically at a stalemate right now. She hasn't been able to get the upper hand," Cheryl bragged lightly. "Oh, and speaking of drama, things over at the Powell Group are a total mess. Your brother and Ophelia are completely at each other's throats. They've been fighting tooth and nail over a major project.
"Ophelia used to be so fake, you know? Always smiling, never confronting anyone directly—she just liked to play dirty behind the scenes. But your brother backed her into such a corner that she actually lost her temper and had a screaming match with him in public! I was there, and honestly, it was hilarious to watch. I've always said she was all bark and no bite. She's great at manipulating my aunt at home, but she's completely out of her depth in the boardroom. Did she really think corporate warfare was that easy?"
When Stefan walked in and caught the tail-end of the gossip, his brow furrowed in immediate disapproval.
"Stop bringing all this toxic garbage around Winona. She doesn't need the stress."
Cheryl stuck her tongue out defensively. "I just figured she might be bored resting all day! I thought she'd want some juicy gossip. Besides, it involves her family!"
Since Cheryl now considered herself firmly on Team Winona and Stefan, she felt completely comfortable speaking her mind around them.
Stefan unceremoniously shooed her out of the house, turning to Winona with a sigh. "Don't listen to her nonsense."
