After eating a light snack, Winona sat on the sofa reviewing some case files. A wave of exhaustion washed over her, and she rested her head against the cushions, slowly drifting off to sleep.
About half an hour later, she was jolted awake by the sound of Biscuit barking frantically.
Winona opened her eyes to see the dog standing right in front of her, tail wagging in distressed jerks. Biscuit grabbed the hem of her shirt in his teeth, trying to pull her toward the door.
Still groggy, she tried to stand up, but a sudden, intense downward pressure hit her abdomen.
She grabbed her phone and immediately texted Ezra Vane, giving him the door code.
"Ma'am, what's wrong?" Ezra rushed in, panic flashing in his eyes as he took in her pale, sweat-slicked face.
"Take me to the hospital."
The cramps in her lower abdomen were intensifying by the second. She couldn't walk. Thankfully, there was a wheelchair in the house. Ezra quickly lifted her into it and rushed her to the car.
By the time they reached triage, her water broke.
She was immediately wheeled into the delivery room.
What followed was a chaotic blur of pain and rushing nurses. Winona barely had time to brace herself before her impatient little one decided it was time to make an entrance.
"It's a beautiful baby girl."
Hearing the nurse's voice, Winona looked over at the tiny, swaddled infant lying in the bassinet, and her eyes instantly welled up with tears.
By the time Stefan arrived, Winona had already been transferred to a private recovery suite. Their daughter was sound asleep in the bedside crib.
Stefan's heart hammered against his ribs as he crossed the room. He took Winona's hand, his eyes full of deep regret. "I am so sorry I wasn't here."
Winona actually looked quite energized. The baby had clearly been eager to meet the world, so the delivery had been surprisingly fast, sparing her the prolonged agony many mothers faced. Thanks to the epidural and the pain medication, she felt perfectly fine.
