The Wife He Forgot to Marry (Winona and Yule) novel Chapter 803

Nikita chuckled softly, though there was a hint of sadness in her eyes. "No, it's better this way. I'm just a frail old woman. Babies are delicate; I don't want to taint her with my old age or pass on any germs and make her sick."

Winona felt an ache in her chest hearing that. "Grandma, what are you talking about? That's nonsense."

Helena frowned, visibly unhappy with her mother's self-deprecating words. "Mom, you basically raised Greta, and she turned out perfectly fine. You're not that old! You just have some gray hair, which we can dye black whenever you want. You shower every day—you don't have an 'old person smell.'"

Nikita waved them off, unconvinced. "I just can't risk it. Our little Audrey needs to have a perfect, healthy life. She can't get sick. Just looking at her is enough for me."

Helena laughed teasingly. "Just wait until she starts walking and running toward you. Let's see if you can resist hugging her then."

Ignoring the banter, Nikita pulled out a thick envelope and handed it to Winona. "I know you make a good salary, and Stefan comes from serious money. But this is my gift for Audrey. You have to take it for her."

Winona took the envelope and was shocked by how heavy it was. "Grandma, did you put your entire life savings in here? You need to keep this for yourself."

"I already have one foot in the grave. What do I need money for? Keep this to buy Audrey toys and candy. It's not for you—you're just keeping it safe for her."

Winona's throat tightened. It reminded her of when she was a little girl with a piggy bank. Every time she opened it, there was always more money inside than she remembered putting in. Later, she found out Nikita had been secretly slipping her own spare change into it.

When Winona used that money to buy little trinkets, her grandmother never complained; instead, she would sit and help her organize her toys.

They hadn't been rich, but Nikita had given her everything she possibly could.

"Okay," Winona said softly, her eyes misty. "I understand. When she's older and knows how to spend it, I'll give it to her."

Nikita's face lit up with joy. "Exactly! That's how it should be. Kids need so many things, and they always have their own little ideas on what to buy."

After Nikita and Greta left, Helena headed to the kitchen to start cooking.
