Winona bought the first available ticket and flew straight to the Capital.
Stefan had just walked out of the Goddard estate with Audrey when he received her message. He quickly texted back, telling her that he had the baby and she should head straight to their penthouse in the city.
He drove Audrey home immediately.
Once inside, he changed her diaper and fed her a fresh bottle of hypoallergenic formula. Full and happy, Audrey lay in her bassinet, adorably playing with her own toes.
Two hours later, the front door burst open.
Winona rushed in, not even pausing to take off her shoes, and bolted straight for the living room. Only when her eyes locked onto her daughter did the terrifying pallor finally leave her face.
Stefan stepped forward and pulled her into a tight embrace. "She's safe. My mother just wanted to see her. I've already warned her never to go near Audrey again."
Winona knew Margaret wasn't the type to just let things go, but right now, she didn't have the energy to care about the woman's schemes. She just desperately wanted to hold her baby.
She went to the bathroom, scrubbed her hands, and changed into clean loungewear before finally scooping Audrey up. Smelling her mother's familiar scent, the baby let out a sweet, gummy smile.
Wynne had rushed over from the hospital the moment she heard about the kidnapping. Seeing her granddaughter safe, she finally let out a breath she felt like she'd been holding for hours.
"This is all my fault. If I had just stayed in Riverton today, Margaret would never have gotten her hands on her," Wynne said, plagued with guilt.
Stefan poured her a glass of water. "Mom, this has nothing to do with you. My mother crossed a massive line."
Wynne sighed heavily. "Every family has its demons, but seriously, when is Margaret ever going to use her brain?"
Since it was already late, Winona decided they would stay the night and fly back to Riverton the next day. Wynne stayed over to help with the baby.
The next morning, a torrential downpour grounded all flights out of the Capital. They were stuck.
Stefan had an unavoidable executive meeting, so he headed into the office, leaving Winona and Wynne at home with Audrey.
