Liana glared at Winona with blatant resentment. "You have parents who dote on you, a successful career, and Stefan treats you like gold. Your life is perfect. You didn't even want to join the Goddard family because you didn't want the restrictions. So why can't you just help me out and step aside? If I don't get this match, my life is going to be a living hell. Can't you have a little sympathy?"
Winona let out a mocking laugh. "Liana, it's not my job to fix your life, and Stefan and I owe you absolutely nothing. Why should we bear the burden of your problems? You don't want an arranged match? Go get a job. If you refuse to work and want to be a trust fund princess forever, then accept your parents' setups. Wanting everything while doing absolutely nothing is not only pathetic, it's hilarious."
Liana felt a surge of indignation.
Yet, used to playing the soft-spoken victim, she didn't dare yell. Instead, she whined, "What do you know? My personality isn't suited for the corporate world! I have terrible anxiety, and my health is too fragile for hard work. Plus, the guys they want me to marry just view me as a trophy wife to pop out heirs. If I marry one of them, my life is over!"
Winona had no patience for her relentless complaining. She stood up, her expression freezing over. "If you refuse to change your own circumstances, then accept your reality. I'm busy. I don't have time to listen to you play the victim."
Liana thought she was being unspeakably cruel.
She opened her mouth to argue, but Winona was already walking away.
Liana didn't want to go back to the Linden estate.
Everyone there just treated her like a commodity with a price tag. Living under that roof felt entirely devoid of dignity.
She had no idea who to turn to.
She had gone to an out-of-state all-girls boarding school from elementary through high school. During college, when her grandmother fell ill, her stepmother claimed that since Liana was the favorite, her presence might help the old woman recover.
So, she was forced to take a leave of absence.
Her grandmother passed away two years later, and by the time Liana returned to campus, she was older than her peers and completely isolated.
After graduation, her stepmother immediately started setting her up, citing her 'fragile health' and hinting that she might struggle to have kids, which meant first-time grooms would pass her over.
As a result, every man she was introduced to was a divorced millionaire with kids, old enough to be her father.
