"Mr. Reynolds." Stefan Goddard set down the file, his dark eyes locking onto the younger man as he cut straight to the chase. "You're Candida Winslow's cousin, aren't you? What's your real agenda for infiltrating Winona's lab?"
Shiloh Reynolds hadn't expected him to uncover his identity so quickly—or his feelings for Winona Jowett. Then again, Stefan had bodyguards tailing Winona; of course, he knew everything.
His palms were slick with sweat, but he forced a calm facade. "I simply admire Ms. Jowett. There are no ulterior motives, Mr. Goddard, I assure you. As for my cousin's actions and affiliations, they don't reflect mine. You don't need to be so paranoid."
Stefan arched a brow. "Do you plan on moving abroad, Mr. Reynolds? I can recommend you for a position much better suited to your talents."
Shiloh pressed his lips together. It took him a long moment to reply. "I appreciate the offer, Mr. Goddard, but I can find a suitable job on my own. I wouldn't want to trouble you."
Because he liked Winona, he couldn't bear to bow his head in front of Stefan.
Stefan let out a low chuckle, effortlessly reading the younger man's mind. "In that case, let me give you one final warning. Don't do anything irreversible to Winona. All those years of relentless studying, the bright future you've fought so hard to build—you wouldn't want to throw it all away, would you?"
Shiloh stiffened.
It was a blatant threat. He knew Stefan could crush him as easily as an ant.
Stefan's corporate headquarters sat in the most expensive, prime real estate of the Capital. In this city, Shiloh couldn't even scrape together a down payment for a tiny studio apartment, while Stefan owned the tallest, most luxurious skyscraper in the skyline. The employees in this building were all elite graduates from top-tier universities, and every single one of them looked up to Stefan like a king. The sheer scale of Stefan's wealth and status was beyond Shiloh's comprehension.
He walked out of the office in a daze. Watching the elevator numbers tick down, a wave of absurdity washed over him. How could he have ever been so arrogant to think he could compete over a woman with a man who stood at the absolute pinnacle of power and wealth?
Perhaps it was because he had always been the smartest kid in his family. Relatives and friends had always put him on a pedestal, slowly blinding him into believing he was God's gift to the world. Later, when he dated, his girlfriends had always looked at him with sheer adoration, inflating his ego even further.
