The Wife He Forgot to Marry novel Chapter 94

In a setting like this, Winona didn’t want to act overly familiar with Stefan. "Not at all," she replied deferentially. "We were just doing our jobs."

She quickly picked a couple of items from the menu and handed it back to Nolan, who placed his order and passed it down the table.

Once the food arrived, everyone waited a beat for Stefan to start before digging in. Seated next to him, Winona was already on edge and was extra careful not to make any missteps. She ate quietly, sticking to what was already on her plate and whatever sides happened to be within reach. But somehow, every option within reach seemed to be meat. After a while, she started craving some vegetables, but none ever seemed to make their way to her.

Stefan noticed she wasn't serving herself. "Is there nothing you want to eat?" he asked.

"I'm already full," Winona said quickly, despite her plate being only half-empty.

He frowned slightly. “Tell me what you want,” he said, reaching for a serving plate. “How about the roasted eggplant?”

Every eye at the table was now fixed on her. Winona felt her ears burn with embarrassment. "That's fine, I can get it myself."

But Stefan had already served some onto her plate. Winona could have cried. Was he always this attentive?

“Ms. Jowett, you don’t have to be so formal with me,” Stefan said. "You helped my grandmother before, so it's only right that I treat you well."

While he couldn't obey his grandmother's wish to pursue a deeper relationship with Winona, he could certainly look after her as if she were family.

People around the table started exchanging knowing looks. Winona barely tasted her food for the rest of the meal, wishing the ground would swallow her whole.

When the lunch finally ended, she breathed a sigh of relief and walked out of the restaurant with the others. Her colleagues paired off to share rides back, but since Winona wasn't particularly close with any of them, she pulled out her phone to call her own car.

The weather had turned colder over the past few days, and the wind outside had a sharp bite to it. Dressed only in a sweater, she couldn't help but shiver.

The window rolled down, and Stefan looked up from his phone, his eyes landing on her delicate face.

Winona smiled and handed him the items. "Thank you for the ride tonight. The cucumbers are from my grandmother's garden, and this milk is really good. I thought you might like them."

He could buy anything he wanted, so this was the only simple way she could thank him.

A smile touched Stefan's eyes. He took the milk and cucumbers. "Thank you. I've received your gift. You should head back inside."

"Okay." She waved to him and turned to go back upstairs.

Stefan placed the cucumbers and milk on the seat next to him, a smile lingering on his lips.
