The Wife He Forgot to Marry novel Chapter 99

Winona clenched her fist slightly before answering in a flat tone, "I inhaled a lot of smoke, so my lungs were irritated. I needed an IV drip."

For a moment, a flicker of concern crossed Yulen’s face. But then he remembered how she had pushed Tallulah at the hospital, and he decided she had been acting completely unreasonable lately. His expression hardened, and he suppressed the urge to show any sympathy. He told himself that if he pulled back for a while, she might calm down and stop making things worse. So, without another glance at her, he turned and left the office.

Winona barely registered his departure, already engrossed in her work.

Suddenly, Eloise, a colleague from a nearby desk, spoke up in a passive-aggressive tone. "I guess that's karma for you. Serves you right for being so clumsy and causing all that trouble. But I suppose a little scrape like yours is nothing compared to the losses Goddard Group suffered. You should be grateful they aren't suing you."

Eloise had recently joined the team to replace a member from Mr. Harper's lab who had left for family reasons. She had held a grudge against Winona for a long time. When Winona turned down a short-term visiting scholar position abroad due to Helena's situation, Mr. Harper had chosen Killian and another member instead. Eloise wasn't even considered as a backup, and she was still fuming about it.

She didn't see it as her own failing, of course. She blamed Winona. If Winona hadn't repeatedly undermined her in front of Mr. Harper, he would never have questioned her professional skills.

Winona ignored her, but Eloise pressed on. "Winona, how long have you even been at Goddard Group? You've already caused a huge disaster and embarrassed Mr. Harper. If I were you, I'd be too ashamed to even show my face here."

Finally fed up with the noise, Winona looked up, her eyes cold. "Eloise, why don't you focus on your own work before you try to lecture me? And for your information, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. My conscience is clear. If you have a problem with that, you can keep it to yourself."

Yulen strode toward her, his face a mask of disapproval. Winona had ignored his advice and was still pinning the blame for the fire on Tallulah. Didn't she realize this could ruin Tallulah's career and damage the Locke Group's reputation? He never knew Winona could be so selfish.

Winona looked at him, her tone weary. "What is it?"

Her indifferent attitude only stoked his anger. "Why are you insisting Tallulah caused the fire? Doesn't your conscience bother you, telling lies like that? What happened to the gentle, kind person you used to be?"

Seeing her detached expression, he rubbed his temples in frustration. "I think you should take my advice and just quit. Go home. Working in a place like this just isn't for you."
