During her lunch break, Natalie snuck over to the hospital. She had chosen a weekday specifically, knowing it was safe to visit Yvonne after seeing Tilda post about working overtime on social media.
Sure enough, Tilda wasn't there. Only the caregiver was in the room.
When Natalie walked in, Yvonne's face lit up with absolute delight. "Natalie!"
Natalie felt a sudden, irrepressible prickle of tears in her eyes. "Grandma, I'm so sorry. I haven't been here to see you lately."
The older woman sighed and shook her head. "I know Tilda wouldn't allow it. Don't blame her, sweetheart. I'll talk some sense into her eventually. She's just terrified that your grandfather and I might get into another accident."
Natalie nodded. "I know. I don't blame her at all."
Curious, she asked the caregiver when Tilda usually came to visit them.
To her surprise, the caregiver revealed that Tilda hadn't been by once in the last few days.
Natalie frowned, genuinely taken aback. How could she not have visited even once?
Yvonne offered a helpless smile. "She told me work has been overwhelming lately. But don't worry, even though she hasn't been here, she still makes time to text us."
A trace of sorrow flickered in her eyes. "After all, my husband and I can't do anything to help her career. I just hope we aren't dragging her down."
Natalie's frown deepened. Yvonne clearly had no idea that Tilda had taken a new job at the Carlson Group, but Natalie did.
For Tilda to be so busy that she couldn't spare a single moment to visit the hospital for days meant someone was likely targeting her at work. Natalie couldn't help but worry if she was the reason behind it.
She stayed to chat with Yvonne, gently massaging her shoulders, and only reluctantly left after a long while.
...
Returning to Sycamore Quays, Natalie pushed the door open. As she stepped into the entryway, she immediately noticed that her shoes had been moved.
She frowned. She knew they had been touched because she hadn't worn heels in ages, and she always kept them arranged in a very specific order.
