Natalie fell silent. She stood there for a moment before turning off the lights and climbing into bed, sleeping as close to the absolute edge of the mattress as possible.
The next morning, Natalie noticed only Mary was bustling around the house. Laura was nowhere to be seen.
She didn't ask about it, assuming the woman had just taken a day off.
Around noon, Natalie found an excuse to visit the Carlson Group headquarters. Under the guise of delivering lunch to Hassan, she wanted to see exactly who was making Tilda's life a living hell.
When she stepped off the elevator at the executive floor, the secretaries instantly tensed up, looking at her like she was a walking bomb.
They all clearly remembered the day she had publicly slapped Gardenia across the face. No one dared step in her way.
But this time, she was completely calm. She simply handed the lunchbox to the head secretary instead of demanding to go inside. "Please give this to him."
With that single instruction, she turned and walked away.
The secretary stared at her retreating back in shock, and the rest of the staff exchanged bewildered looks. She wasn't throwing a fit to see him? Normally, she refused to leave unless she handed the food directly to Hassan herself.
When the secretary brought the lunchbox into the office, Hassan glanced at it. She quickly explained, "Mrs. Carlson dropped this off. She asked me to bring it in."
Without thinking, his eyes flicked toward the door.
"She left," the secretary added hastily. "She looked like she had somewhere to be. I saw her..." she pressed the button for the twelfth floor.
Before she could finish her sentence, he cut her off coolly. "Get out."
The twelfth floor housed the Business Department.
The moment Natalie stepped out of the elevator, she was hit by a barrage of vicious screaming. "Tilda! You're practically menopausal! Do you even have a brain? You've been in the workforce for almost twenty years, you're about to retire, and you're still this stupid?"
The rest of the department had their heads down, terrified to make a sound. The manager hurled a stack of files onto the floor. "Take this back and fix it!"
Natalie saw Tilda's face was bright red and swollen—she had clearly just been slapped. Her white blouse was stained with coffee, and a shattered ceramic mug lay on the floor, brown liquid splattered everywhere.
