Seeing her friend arrive, Mia immediately grabbed one of her favorite pastries and ran over to hand it to Adrian.
Jacob glanced at Gardenia. Normally, he would be cracking jokes and livening up the atmosphere by now.
But for some reason, Yale's previous warning echoed in his mind.
His eyes involuntarily drifted toward Hassan and Natalie.
Neither of them looked at each other.
Even though Jacob had grown up with Hassan, he didn't fully understand the man's inner workings.
Out of their entire friend group, Hassan's thoughts were always the hardest to read.
Just as Jacob was about to look away, Hassan lifted his gaze and said directly to Adrian, "Don't eat too many sweets. Aren't you afraid of the dentist?"
Jacob instantly let out a sigh of relief. It seemed Yale really had just been covering for Natalie when he gave that warning.
Given how much Hassan clearly cared about Adrian, it was obvious he had fought Jude purely for Gardenia's sake.
Adrian pulled Gardenia toward Hassan.
Gardenia smiled softly. "I'll just stand here and watch you guys play a few rounds. I have to take Adrian for his afternoon nap in a bit."
She paused for a second before looking directly at Hassan. "Adrian has been waiting for you to finish reading him that book from last time."
Hassan's hand paused briefly over his cards. His thin lips parted. "I'll read it to him tonight."
The phrase 'tonight' carried an intensely intimate weight between a man and a woman.
Natalie popped a slice of orange into her mouth.
Jude propped his chin on his hand, narrowing his eyes at her. "Natalie, feeling a little bitter?"
Natalie raised an eyebrow. "I peeled it myself, so it's perfectly sweet."
"Heh." Jude let out a short laugh before glancing sideways at Cora. "Peel one for me."
Natalie rolled her eyes at how he ordered Cora around like a servant.
But Cora didn't let any emotion show. She carefully peeled an orange and fed it to Jude.
