The group in the pavilion was deep in their game when they suddenly heard a loud splash from the stone bridge.
Everyone snapped their heads in that direction.
A passing maid screamed, "The kids fell in the water!"
Hassan bolted upright and sprinted out.
By the bridge, a chaotic crowd had already formed.
Cora stood paralyzed, gripping Mia tightly, her face pale. The moment she saw Hassan, she cried out, "Save them! They fell in—I can't swim!"
Everyone stared in horror at the lake, where two figures were thrashing wildly, sending up violent splashes.
The next second, someone dove in.
Jude arrived a second later. He didn't even notice Cora standing there; his eyes locked onto Gardenia struggling in the water, and he jumped in without hesitation.
In the span of a few seconds, a massive crowd had gathered.
Hassan was the first one back on land. Everyone saw him clearly—he was holding the pale, unconscious little boy against his chest. He frantically laid the child on the grass and immediately began CPR.
Jude pulled Gardenia out of the water next. The moment he reached the shore, his furious gaze pinned Cora down. "Didn't I tell you never to touch her?"
Cora's heart convulsed. Her hand holding Mia trembled violently. "I didn't..."
It had happened because the two kids had gotten into a squabble and started pulling on each other. Gardenia had stepped in to grab Adrian, while Cora had held onto Mia. Gardenia, who had been standing closest to the edge, lost her footing and accidentally dragged Adrian into the water with her.
But Adrian had been holding tightly onto Natalie's hand.
Wait. Natalie.
Panic seized Cora's eyes. She screamed, "Where is Natalie?!"
