Not a single person had looked her way. No one had noticed her twisted ankle or that she was completely unable to save herself.
Despair swallowed her whole, just like the freezing lake. Her consciousness began to blur, and her limbs slowly lost all sensation.
She sank helplessly, quietly waiting for the darkness and death to cover her.
When Natalie finally opened her eyes, she was in a hospital room. Yvonne sat beside the bed, gently brushing the hair from Natalie's face. Her eyes were brimming with heartache. "You're awake."
The moment she opened her eyes, her grandmother hurriedly stood up to bring over a bowl of her favorite seafood soup, ready to feed her. "You scared me half to death. How on earth did you fall into the water?"
Natalie's eyes instantly welled with tears. Her lips trembled as she pressed them together. She threw her arms around Yvonne, her body shaking violently as the suffocating wave of grievances finally broke. "Grandma."
Her voice cracked, and she clung to the older woman like a lifeline.
A weathered, gentle hand softly patted her back.
Two knocks sounded at the door before a doctor walked in to check on her.
Natalie slowly released her grandmother and cooperated with the examination.
While the doctor examined her, the nurse standing beside him casually remarked, "If the little boy next door checks out fine, he should be discharged soon. Honestly, I'm a bit sad to see him go. I've never seen such a well-behaved, gorgeous kid."
As the doctor was pulling his stethoscope away, Natalie suddenly spoke. "Grandma, I really want some pineapple from the fruit stand outside the hospital."
Yvonne immediately agreed. "Of course, I'll go buy some. Finish a bit of your soup first to warm your stomach after your checkup, then you can have the pineapple."
The second Yvonne left, Natalie threw off the covers and bolted out the door.
The doctor and nurse scrambled after her. "Ms. Thornton, what are you doing?"
Natalie shoved the door to the neighboring room wide open. Inside, she saw Hassan and Gardenia sitting by the bed, warmly keeping watch over the child. It looked like the perfect, loving family portrait.
