He casually tossed the pillow back onto the bed. "Suit yourself. It's not like your petulance is anything new."

Her breath hitched slightly, her voice trembling with repressed fury. "Right. No matter what I do, you just see it as me throwing a tantrum. So do me a favor—stop bothering yourself with my tantrums. Until the divorce is finalized, let's just pretend we're complete strangers."

The man's brow furrowed tightly, an intimidating darkness settling over his features. His leather shoes clicked against the sterile hospital floor as he stepped right up to the bed. Leaning over, he braced one hand against the mattress, his inky eyes locking onto hers. "You are Mrs. Carlson. That fact will never change."

"Oh, I understand. You just need a perfectly obedient Mrs. Carlson to act as your prop." Natalie let out a bitter, mocking laugh.

His lips pressed into a hard line. Without another word, he straightened up and casually reached over, dialing down the flow rate on her IV regulator.

Natalie frowned. "What are you doing? I need to get discharged as soon as possible."

"What exactly do you have to rush off to?"

His dismissive tone infuriated her. He spoke as if she were a useless parasite with nothing to do all day.

"I have a job to get back to," she replied coldly.

The man's expression remained perfectly flat. "You call that a job? Your monthly salary barely covers the cost of one of your handbags."

She glared up at him. "I can live without expensive bags."

"Can you?" he countered smoothly. "The great Natalie Thornton, pampered her entire life... do you honestly believe you can just downgrade to a frugal lifestyle after living in luxury for so long?"

"I'll make my own money. I'll live whatever life my own paycheck affords me." Natalie reached up and aggressively cranked the IV flow regulator back open. "I am not some useless piece of trash who can't survive without you."

"Is that so?" The corner of his mouth twitched in a faint sneer. "I hope you realize, Natalie, that the money you make from months of grueling dance rehearsals won't even cover a single casual shopping spree."

"And I hope you realize that people are capable of growing," she smiled coldly. "I'm only going to get better."
